It's Summertime!

It's finally summer time!
(at least for those of us in the northern hemisphere!)



So, I want to know...

What is your favourite thing to do in the summer? Are you a total beach bum? Lake lifer? How do you like to stay cool? Popsicles, ice cream, good old fashioned AC?
Maybe you have a favourite memory from the summer time? I wanna hear about it!

I will go first!

As a kid, we would always go to the outdoor waterslide park in June at the end of the school year. We would stay all day until we were EXHAUSTED. There was this one slide that was super scary to me, it was really fast, had big drops and was in pitch black. I remember the year I turned 12, I was FINALLY brave enough to go down it by myself. So I did, and it was a blast! Once it was time to leave, we'd get a twist (chocolate and vanilla swirled) soft serve ice cream cone.

There's this dessert chain place called Mango Mango that I go to specifically because I love mango desserts but they make all the same mango desserts in durian version and the restaurant sometimes smells like durian and it kills me to go LOL

Also Wave how can you dislike plums?!?!?1 I LOVE PLUMS they're so good and juicy and sweet with a little bit of tartness AND I'M FUCKING ALLERGIC TO THEM 😭😭😭😭

wait you know what popular fruit i can't rly eat? pineapple.
it makes my mouth HURT so bad. i like how sweet it is when you grill it, but other than that i can't / won't eat it unless i want my mouth to get a bunch of sores

On Thursday, I was on kitchen duty at child care and I had to cut up a bunch of pineapple and I got itchy itchyyyyyy just from touching it. I love the smell of it, it smells so... tropical and... summery... if that makes sense?

But the taste and texture? Nuh uh.

i didnt know it was possible to be in so much pain after eating a fruit but pineapple is the Enemy.
i like the taste of it on pizza or if its grilled, but cold normal pineapple... tastes yucky and it HURTS it smells so delicious though its not right

Interestingly enough it's because pineapples contain an enzyme that breaks down some of the saliva that keeps our mouth protected, the high acidity level is painful! I will never forget when I heard or read that "pineapple is the only food that eats you back while you try to eat it"

I did have some grilled pineapple today at the bbq I went to and it was super yum, I think grilling it also took away some of the "bite"?

I think it pineapple makes a lot of people have an itchy mouth, there's some sort of scientific explanation beyond acidity, but i just remember from seeing some meme that said "pineapple hurt mouth", lmao.

Contact dermatitis is definitely thing with some fruit! Some you can even eat without issue, but touching it will make your skin go "lol, nope".

OOOHHHH that sounds about right actually!! i think grilling it might help get rid of some of the shit that makes it hurt??

The irritation is caused by a combination of enzymes in pineapples called bromelian, which break down proteins and essentially attack your tongue, cheeks, and lips on contact. But once you chew and swallow it, both your saliva and stomach acids overtake them.

Contact dermatitis I DO have, my skin is soooo sensitive and will swell and/or get hives for what seems like no reason. A lot of things make my skin go "lol, nope".
But like, it was even just touching the fruit before cutting it? ITCHY ITCHY, so bad. I probably need another allergy test done regardless, as my last one yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrsssssssssss ago, they only did animals and environmental things like grasses and pollen and all that jazz.

Speaking of allergies, I always feel bad for people whose allergies act up come spring and summer to the point where its hard for them to enjoy the nice weather, and even worse if they have food allergies. I had a child who was allergic to strawberries, like severely. There were so many things she could not have that I was so surprised by. Strawberry is a childhood summer STAPLE.

I can get pretty bad seasonal allergies at times, not the worst of the worst, but enough that it baffles me that some people just...don't have seasonal allergies?

i don't have seasonal allergies, or any allergies to like, dust/grasses.
but u know what i am allergic to? the fucking sun. if i dont wear sunscreen outside i break out in hives. 🧍
