I feel the one who instigated the date should pay so if the guy asked the girl out for a night - yes please pay. If the girl asked the guy she has to pay.

I'm a big fan of splitting in most circumstances, but I also haven't really gone on many dates. But, idk, I feel like it keeps things simple.

i assume your brother is younger than you and is naive.
in the end no one ever knew what the outcome would be. So I guess you have to do your best to make a decision that you wont regret.

What do you mean by making a girl pay? As in pay for both of them or just for herself? I don't necessarily feel it's wrong to each pay for themselves. Especially on very early dates. Although once you get to know someone, it feels nicer to split things or even better: to alternate paying for each other.

I mean it as a male who ask's a girl on the date and then makes her pay, be it "I forgot my wallet" or him actually saying she has to.
    Thats all I mean.

I'm in a 3 year relationship and i still offer to split the bill if its expensive or i pay for it instead of my bf. When it comes to first dates, its just the normal thing for guys to pay. If it's been talked about that its dutch or by your own, no big deal. I think its a per situation opinion.

I firmly believe in getting rid of the whole "guys are expected to pay" idea, but it's still floating around our culture and I'm not really good at talking about it beforehand or even talking about it at all without making it awkward.. so a lot of the time I just end up paying even though I don't believe in it. :/

YES. We are putting away our precious time to spend it with you. If you really like someone, they need to feel taken care of not just financially either.

But the guy is also spending his precious time on the date as well. Time is precious to everyone, not just women.

I knew a guy who had the same mentality as you. Trust me if you value someone enough. You put them above everything and will do everything to make them happy.
