@(you need an account to see links) It might depend on what board you're active on, obviously PC is full of report happies but I can't tell you how stalkerish the other users on other boards are.
Best of luck! You bet I'm here on the ride with you
Edit, (you need an account to see links) the UC section of this guide should be super helpful!

Just adding my two cents to the pile to help ease your heartburn and echoing sentiments cleverer folks than me have shared.
Pretty much all of us who've bought a pet have done this at some point, and unless you scurry off to the PC and make up a BS cover story in order to show it off ("OMG MY BFF QUIT NEOPETS AND GAVE ME LOLA, ISN'T SHE BEAUTIFUL, LOOK GUYS") and draw attention to yourself, you'll most likely be fine.
It's people who crave the attention of having UCs that are usually brought down by purchasing them.
If you're buying them for your own happiness, not to get your ego stroked, then you're 100% better off.

I've bought some mid-high tiers, and I always fake my trades with some BD Pets that I have around my shells.

Solid advice from everyone so far. The PC is the most dangerous place for sure, but if your account looks good and the UC isn't a super high tier I doubt people will look into it.
What I will say is, if you do decide to ever trade the pets, stalk the PC for a good while to see who's who. There are some people who are "high-profile" PCers and are always on there, and I'd be more wary to trade with them because suddenly that pet would be in the spotlight, too. And of course, there are some people you should just never trade with because they'll report their own pet to see if it's "legit" or not.

Just piggy backing off this board
But what's the deal with shell / blank accounts neofriending you? I bought an account, plan on getting a nice uc pet. But I've gotten 3 nf requests from blank accounts.
Neopets nation (fb group) says this is a way for hackers to check if the account is active. (Which doesnt make sense to me? I have my last spotted on)
Does anyone here do this or have an explanation? Should I not buy a uc for this account?
Everyone gave some pretty solid advice. I had an experience that may put your heart at ease in regards of the transfered pet.

Some of my tips
It doesn't matter how long you wait. The only trade reversal I ever had was an account I babysat for a year then traded a 1 for 1 same tier and it was still iced. It doesn't matter just move it straight away.
Always trade one for one.
Always have a dialog between you and the "other' account.
If you buy a pet ask the seller to trade you one for one even if it's a crap pet.
Not keeping the shell is best.
There are safe pcers to trade with but I agree with everyone. Stay away from the pc.
Make the pet look loved and taken care of for years. Like you've owned it for years
