It's scary that they may not be able to revert stuff back in case of an accident. Is there a way for a coder/programmer to test something like this before making it live? Or is it kind of a "apply and then fix as necessary" situation?

I feel like we were guinea pigs a year ago when they made all Pets that were able to be UC Were made UC... then they rolled back and people with replicas had to submit new tickets.... I feel like that was a test.

I'd highly recommend that you screenshot each of your pets, even if they aren't unconverted, and make sure to capture all of their stats, their petpets and petpetpets, as well as any equipment they have as well. What they're about to do is modify the entire site's pet tables, and they can't even reliably reward prizes for weekly contests without queries failing halfway through. If anything happens to your pets, they might not have a backup to help you with. Gather evidence while you can!

General things like this would be done in a test environment with sample data before getting pushed to production. Also, with things at such a massive scale like this it's good practice to break it up into chunks and do it in batches, so that way if something does go wrong, the entire thing isn't fucked and it's easier to roll back.

This is what blows my mind about Neopets.

They don't seem to possess a test server/test environment like any reasonable business would, just like you mentioned.

As best I can tell, they just YOLO everything onto the real Neopets.com and the userbase gets to suffer the ill effects.

If the devs I work with had to do that they'd have a meltdown, so gotta give it to TNT's mental fortitude I suppose
