Why would someone want to pay for an NFT, especially if it's not something the buyer explicitly asked to be made for them (like commissioned art for example)? What's the point? Is it really only bragging rights?
I don't know if living my internet life as a pirate since ever just makes me unable to comprehend paying for picture/video/whatever you can save for free.

It is a combination of bragging rights, and the fact many NFT bruhs think that these not-real, digital items have collectible value. Essentially, shitty digital beanie babies, as someone on the neo-cord put it.

They buy them to brag and to resell later, potentially, to other suckers to turn a profit.

Most people who'd be buying/selling these in any significant volume are people who are buying it to make money by selling it back at a later. You, the average player, who might purchase one or two as a fun sentimental bit, are not the target audience for a Neopets NFT, you're just an unknowing participant in someone elses earnings.

It's way easier to justify a rug pull or a pump and dump when the "common" buyer thinks that they're purchasing a digital asset with some level of value, and it doesn't matter if they lose money, since they were happy with the price they paid for what they received, but I promise you, most people who will buy or trade the neopets NFT, and probably most online art NFTs, do not care all about the actual product they get in exchange. It's literally just a number in a portfolio.

Which, tbh, is why this is all pretty insidious to me since, whether or not it's the reality, Neopets has branded themselves as a childrens site, and legally operates as one, so having an official NFT tie in seems... kinda scummy... especially give the reputation for NFTs in September 2021. It's hard to see this as anything other than a quick (and potentially unethical) cashgrab from the higher ups at Neopets/Jumpstart/Netdragon/the Church of Scientology/I lost track of who owns what now

I think they're randomized to be like generative art. There was also a big thing called CryptoKitties a few years ago that got popular with randomly generated cats, some of which got super valuable.

I used to feel a lil bad that I play illegit and buy my NC through ck instead of supporting Neopets directly, but turns this is what they use their money for anyways so no regrets.

I imagine someone at NetDragon read about how much money was being generated by CryptoKitties on the Ethereum Blockchain and thought "Hey! we have digital pets...if we made them non-fungible we could make monies!! It is the ultimate unconverted!"

...but they obviously did not consider their audience. I do not see the average Neopets player creating a crypto wallet, buying Ethereum, and then entering the NFT market for a Neopet.

It has the potential to be a good blockchain game...it has many similarities to the existing Blockchain games. But the current Neopets Team is not up to this task. They can't even make it a post-Flash mobile-friendly game. I have no confidence they could transition it to blockchain.

Keep in mind they tried collectable crypto cards a year or two ago and it was a complete and total flop. I don't know how many buyers there actually were, but I got the impression there was no more than 50 or 100 buyers. I can't imagine this going much better especially with the supply far exceeding any supply we had there, and at least with cards there was a distant possibility of them actually being useful with say a deckbuilding game later.
