Still a high school punk, but I just had to say that @(you need an account to see links) your passion about teaching really made me happy
I don't think many teachers here can say the same, or maybe they had, once upon a time - but as a student, I thank you and encourage you to keep it up. There have been so many times I wanted to give up but kept going because my teacher saw potential and imo that's what teachers should do. It's awesome to have that involvement with your students

I think one time I was about to buy an essay off of you or something but last minute opted to do it myself because I did t wanna feel like I was letting my teacher down, lol

Anyway, I recently decided I wanna do something that helps the environment
I also have an interest in being a geneticist after reading this sweet article @(you need an account to see links) showed me about scientists altering genetic code in some mosquitos. they'd mate with some deadly ones and produce larvae that dont make it
Which is pretty dope if ya ask me.

I've worked as a team member and a manager for a smoothie chain, a manager for a frozen yogurt place, and an RA at my uni.
Obviously neither were things I really wanted to do as "careers" per se, but I noticed that the one thing that really made the difference in how well I worked and how much I felt reassured to work harder was my supervisor. For a time at the smoothie chain and for the first year I was an RA, I had the best bosses. They genuinely cared about me, talked to me with sincerity and didn't BS anything over me, and they made sure to prop up good work and call me out when I wasn't doing my best. On the contrary I've had bosses that were so unethical and amoral they made me want to ragequit, pull out my hair, etc. I've been worked like a horse with nothing to show for it, told to cover up others' messes and then somehow blamed for their issues, and even asked to try to keep some otherwise serious concerns 'hush hush' <<< REALLY pissed me off.
I don't have to love what I'm doing for a job (not a career, totally different), but if I feel respected and appreciated by my supervisors without having to compromise myself, I'm a-okay.

@(you need an account to see links), I remember that. I still have a file called "Crucible for Mint" on my computer, haha. Genetics are awesome though. It was something I considered myself back in school. Changing the world, playing god.

@(you need an account to see links), if it's the people you work with that help make temporary jobs worthwhile, then that's great. The people can definitely make or break a workplace, so I'm glad you have had some good experiences with them.

I'd like to echo what @(you need an account to see links) said, it's great to see someone so passionate about teaching, @(you need an account to see links)!
I had a rough time in school, and if it wasn't for certain teachers, I probably wouldn't have made it through and been where I am today. I wish more kids had that positive influence and role model, but sadly some teachers really seem to have lost all hope. My younger brother who's 11 is having a tough time, he's in mainstream school, but has Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and there are far too many teachers in his school that just don't seem to get that he's not like other kids, and does need a different kind of support in order just to get him through the day. It takes him longer to take things in, and he's a slow writer so can't make notes like the other kids, but some teachers just think he's being naughty or not trying, and it really saddens me that they could be the reason he's not going to get the education he deserves.

I think it's a definite flaw in the system if there aren't support measures in places, especially if he has diagnosed ASD. We have legislative requirements about differentiation, especially for students with diagnosed conditions like that. One of my year 7s sounds similar in a few ways. It's not hard to adjust, nor to print out the lesson notes to save stress with hand writing as much. I hope he finds a better teacher shortly.

@(you need an account to see links) - They do have some support in place for him, and my Mum's fighting for more. He currently gets two hours a day, but that obviously doesn't cover all of his lessons. I think the main problem is that his condition hasn't been totally explained to all of his teachers, now that he's in secondary school he has different teachers for each lesson, but either they don't care or don't know (Which I find hard to believe because it's fairly obvious). It's got to a point where he's saying he wants to kill himself because he hates it so much, which is worrying, but they don't seem to take it seriously and there are so many channels to go through before they'll move him into a specialist unit. I might pass the info about lesson notes onto my Mum to pass onto the school, that's a great idea and should be easily done! Thanks!

Honestly speaking, I feel like I'm a sheep. It's just a stereotype that working in Finance/Banking will earn you big bucks. Most people who study Finance/Banking (in my course) thinks that way.
Most of them don't have the interest in Finance/Banking, but they want to work in a Bank.

That's why i feel that the education and work system in my country is f-ked up.
You need a degree to get a "good job", regardless of whether you're actually good at the job.
You may have straight As and graduate as a First Class Honors, but you may still suck at doing your job. (Or at least that's what most ppl say).
BUT, You'll still need to have the degree to land the job.

    Sigh...

What would make you happy to do then? What would access your skills and passions? Is a higher income worth sacrificing your happiness?

My bro has a degree in Finance and only ended up doing CSR at a bank but now he's a suit at a warehouse. Having that degree will eventually pay off. It sucks; believe me I understand. I struggle daily with having a degree in something I couldn't care less about. But most employers just care to see you put the commitment in rather than what it's for.

Playing games and earning a living, that's what i would love.
That's not ever going to happen though.

If we're talking about a 30%-50%++ pay increment for happiness, i guess it's worth it.
Heck, even if I do not take up the degree in Finance, I still wouldn't know what i want to do.
Might as well take up the degree and hope for the best.
