How would it affect database stuff/how would it be difficult, that's my question. I would assume that each pet has a conversion status in the database, either X or Y, and that corresponds with species+color to produce its base pet image. It doesn't seem difficult at all.
Then again, Neopets is completely spaghetti code in the first place...

As for the "but muh NC money flow" argument, they could just make it an NC-only thing after it's a one-time CC thing. Set it at 1500 or 2000 NC a pop, watch the cash roll in.

Personally programming wise I think that long technical explanation for no UCs only applies to making UCs be able to wear clothes in the system. Clearly they have to make current wearables work for UCs too today, at least the not-clothes stuff. They've already done the work, so I don't buy it.

You're probably right. There aren't that many constraints tied to the configuration of the pet's color and species. That's evidenced by the amf and pipe-delimited write-outs that are used by various Flash games and interfaces. The long abandoned petpages are still using the old pet color and species image references as well. They were never upgraded to render pets with customized appearances, and so the pet photos still point to just the color and species in the old style. The lab ray results page still uses the old style too. Certainly the "converted" flag can't be that complicated to revert if so many parts of the site's code are still functioning on the old parameters.
