You can't just drop a song and run. (If you want to do that, you can post a song you're listening to over (you need an account to see links).)
If you want to share a song that can or has made you cry, tell me why.
Is there something about the song itself? Was it a time in your life that you heard the song, and the song makes you think back to that time? Perhaps the song was played during a sad scene in your favorite movie, and you always associate it with the death of a character?
You can post more than one, but if this becomes popular (hahahahahaha) please limit to one post a day. Please give me some way to listen to the song, either youtube or spotify. Lyrics are nice, but not required.
I'll start.
Mad World.
There are many different versions of Mad World, and I kind of love them all. The most recent is a fantastic (you need an account to see links):
The original is a (you need an account to see links) from the 80's, faster paced with synthesizers and percussion (AKA very Tears for Fears and very 1982.) But the Gary Jules version (2001) is the first one that made me cry because of the film Donnie Darko. If you somehow have not seen this movie, I will not spoil it for you (if anyone else does I'll thwap them). But this song plays at the end of this movie, and I ugly cry. Even without thinking of the movie, I absorb the lyrics to this song now and I can tear up.
----------------------------------
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places
Worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
The tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head, I wonna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
Find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find hard to take
When people running circles its a very, very
Mad world, mad world
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
He looked right through me, 'looked right through me
And I find it kind of funny
Find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I 've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find hard to take
When people runnin' circles its a very, very
Mad world, mad world
Enlarge on your world
Mad world

The beautiful (you need an account to see links) version from 2008 comes in a close second. (It's live, can you believe he sounds that good live? I don't care that he flubbed a lyric here and there, he was on live, terrifying TV.) (He was robbed by the way. Anyone know who David Archuleta is in 2020? No? Didn't think so.)
The new Pentatonix version is 3rd now, tied with (you need an account to see links) version.
(I told you I really love this song didn't I? Did I forget to mention this?)
Anyway someone else's turn. Make me cry!

Before You Go by Lewis Capaldi
A lot of associate this song with break ups but uh...it's very much about the aftermath of suicide. As some one who has been on both sides, it's incredibly heart breaking and a beautiful acknowledgement that there are people you will leave behind to pick up the pieces if you decide to take your own life.
Lyrics
I fell by the wayside like everyone else
I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, but I was just kidding myself
Our every moment, I start to replace
'Cause now that they're gone, all I hear are the words that I needed to say
When you hurt under the surface
Like troubled water running cold
Well, time can heal, but this won't
So, before you go
Was there something I could've said to make your heart beat better?
If only I'd have known you had a storm to weather
So, before you go
Was there something I could've said to make it all stop hurting?
It kills me how your mind can make you feel so worthless
So, before you go
Was never the right time, whenever you called
Went little by little by little until there was nothing at all
Our every moment, I start to replay
But all I can think about is seeing that look on your face
When you hurt under the surface
Like troubled water running cold
Well, some can heal, but this won't
So, before you go
Was there something I could've said to make your heart beat better?
If only I'd have known you had a storm to weather
So, before you go
Was there something I could've said to make it all stop hurting?
It kills me how your mind can make you feel so worthless
So, before you go
Would we be better off by now
If I'd have let my walls come down?
Maybe, I guess we'll never know
You know, you know
Before you go
Was there something I could've said to make your heart beat better?
If only I'd have known you had a storm to weather
So, before you go
Was there something I could've said to make it all stop hurting?
It kills me how your mind can make you feel so worthless
So, before you go

I get super emotional easily so it's not hard for a song to make me cry lol ;-;
But right now it's Rolling Girl, in particular Lollia's cover for it:
(TW: suicidal themes)
Lyrics:
As someone who has been bullied and fought with depression and suicidal thoughts for most of my school years, I found myself sympathizing so much with the girl in this song. I am doing better now, but this song brings me back to such a dark time in my life. I can't help but think of how the girl in the song feels, and it literally makes me cry. But I love it regardless, and continue to listen to it every now and then

[trigger warning - suicide]
Songs like this are why I don't really like when people throw shade on pop music just for being "pop." Just because younger people like an artist and may go overboard in their fanatacism toward them doesn't necessarily make the artist any less of a musician. There's plenty of mass-produced crap out there, but this is beautiful and moving and terribly sad.
I hope that maybe knowing the story behind the lyrics -- I picked up a few lines from an interview and it seems to be inspired by the suicide of Lewis Capaldi's aunt when he was a child, and he was inquiring of his mother how she emotionally processed that loss, and what went through her mind -- might make someone treading that path think again.
Thank you for sharing that one, I have heard it on the radio, etc., but honestly never listened hard enough to the lyrics to completely process what was going on there.
This is kind of crazy! If you aren't paying attention, the song sounds so upbeat and positive. Then you start listening to the words and your mind goes ......
The depth of the cruelty of kids is pretty astounding. I walked that path as well, and I cried a lot of tears in my life before I stopped letting what other people said and did have so much of an effect on me it could crush my spirit. I hope you've emerged stronger, too, Stardust!
What's the source for this song? I did a little searching, but my results were inconclusive, so I figured I'd just ask the source. Is it genuinely just originally a song, or is it connected to other media? Film, anime, etc.? I thought I saw a manga perhaps, but could have been something else.

@(you need an account to see links) I'm glad you've gotten away from that negative mindset and came out a stronger person. It's not always easy, and it's definitely not something I'd wish on anybody. I've gotten stronger since then and am doing great now
It's an original song written by Wowaka and made by him using the vocal synthesizing software / vocaloid Miku Hatsune. It has become well-known among the vocaloid fandom, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were fan-made manga or anime using the song/story as inspiration
Here's the original song (it's in Japanese, but there's English subtitles if you turn on captions):

I don't know if songs from musicals count, since it's not just the music, it's the performance as well...but there are a few from musicals that definitely apply!
The one that instantly sprung to mind was I'll Cover You (reprise) from Rent. Earlier, this pair of young men sang to each other about how they'd each contribute to their blossoming relationship. It is full of joy and beauty. This reprise comes after one of them
Less purely sad, more bittersweet is For Good from Wicked. Two friends singing about the impact they've had on each other's lives.

I actually have an entire list for this, as my friend challenged me to it once a while ago.
1. Songs that make me cry point-blank:
(As in, I can be in a totally normal mood or even a good mood and these songs usually lead me to tears)
(you need an account to see links)
My Mother used to sing this to my sister and I when we were children (because we had it on a cassette tape), and even then the emotion in her voice and in the lyrics made us uncomfortable and we banned her from singing this. Years later I found this on Youtube and just bawled my eyes out. Sent it to my Mother and sister and they did too. This song makes me really connect back to my early childhood which is both extremely nostalgic and also somewhat painful. This song also strongly reminds me of my Mother who I know won't be around forever.

I don't know if this counts as a song (there's music and rhymes) but this will always get me. As someone who's had lots of animals in my care over my short lifetime, it's always hard saying goodbye. Even if you're making the right decision, you feel so heartbroken because you can't actually explain to them what's happening. You just hope they understand how much you love them and that you're putting their best interests at heart.
(you need an account to see links)
I grew up on his music (as I was raised in a Christian household) and I still think he has one of the most emotive voices/songs. This song tells a story and usually brings me to tears even though I know what to expect.
(you need an account to see links)
All I have to do is think about abandoned pets when I hear these lyrics and the tears don't stop...the fact that animals will always forgive us for the things we do, even though we don't deserve it.
(you need an account to see links)
This seems like an odd one, but it's the most beautiful and somber-sounding rendition of this song I've ever heard. I was moved by it the first time I listened to it, but nowadays it shakes me even more because one of my guinea pigs actually passed away in my arms while this was in the background. So hearing it always reminds me of that painful but beautiful moment, as he had the most peaceful passing of any pet I've known.
(you need an account to see links)
Another emotive song by him, with a relatable storyline for many families.
2. Songs that get me if I'm already down, or need to cry:
Basically songs I listen to if I need to cry.
(you need an account to see links)
An incredibly sad storyline, sung so beautifully.
(you need an account to see links)
Such a somber song that just pulls at my heartstrings.
(you need an account to see links)
This is just such a beautiful song. I'm not even religious anymore but this is so incredibly touching.

I've always felt like I identified with Van Gogh and this song is so sad but so beautiful.
(you need an account to see links)
Another story song that is really sad and very relatable for lots of people.
(you need an account to see links)
Very relatable imo and something I often listened to during the hardest points of my life.
(you need an account to see links)
One of my main go-to's when I need to cry my eyes out because it's a great song when you feel empty or worthless.
(you need an account to see links)
It's a beautiful song, but honestly it makes me cry because it makes me think of a guinea pig I was extremely bonded with during a time in my life when I was very depressed/suicidal.
(you need an account to see links)
Literally only makes me cry because it makes me think about my brother who passed in 2013.
(you need an account to see links)
Just a great angry and sad song that always gets the tears flowing if I need to cry.
3. Somber songs:
Songs that sometimes make me cry depending on my mood.

@(you need an account to see links) Oh noooo. When She Loved Me and Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again are two very emotional and beautiful songs. To expand on the musical front, I have to be awful and add that Frozen 2's songs "Show Yourself" and "Next Right Thing" are absolutely beautiful and very accurate to real life experiences.
Lyrics to Next Right Thing
I've seen dark before, but not like this
This is cold, this is empty, this is numb
The life I knew is over, the lights are out
Hello, darkness, I'm ready to succumb
I follow you around, I always have
But you've gone to a place I cannot find
This grief has a gravity, it pulls me down
But a tiny voice whispers in my mind
You are lost, hope is gone
But you must go on
And do the next right thing
Can there be a day beyond this night?
I don't know anymore what is true
I can't find my direction, I'm all alone
The only star that guided me was you
How to rise from the floor?
But it's not you I'm rising for
Just do the next right thing
Take a step, step again
It is all that I can to do
The next right thing
I won't look too far ahead
It's too much for me to take
But break it down to this next breath, this next step
This next choice is one that I can make
So I'll walk through this night
Stumbling blindly toward the light
And do the next right thing
And, with it done, what comes then?
When it's clear that everything will never be the same again
Then I'll make the choice to hear that voice
And do the next right thing

This song didn't make me cry or anything but when I first heard it, the lyrics just blew me away. A true master. I have yet to get bored of it, probably heard it 10+ years ago.
