I have a small problem with my disc drive... when I try to run discs it makes this aggressive whirring sound, not unlike a push mower.
Odd thing? My device manager says the drive is working perfectly, nor is it throwing up errors.
It just simply won't read the disc and won't run already installed programs when I put the disc in.
Is there a simple fix for this, or will I need to take my laptop in to be fixed?
This could be a variety of problems. If you're using an old computer whose processing speed is now "outdated," it may take a while for the drive to read. Are there scratches, et cetera, on the disk that could be frustrating the laser? If so, a trick that some soldiers I knew figured out was to put tooth paste (GENTLY) on the CD and rinse/dry it off... then try. It tends to smooth out the scratches and give the laser some hope.
If the disk you're wanting read isn't damaged, you may have bumped your computer and caused the drive's slot to be somewhat off-kilter in alignment. If all those fancy little prongs, et cetera, aren't connecting and able to send electrical impulses, the drive won't read (guess he becomes illiterate!). At that point, if you're not comfortable with the inside components of your computer, ask a friend or take it in for a check-up.
New cd drives are like 10-20 , more for blueray ect but really who needs blueray on a laptop unless u have very specific needs?
Find urself a pc geek , slip him a 10-20 and job done. localshops will probably overcharge u.
Come to think of it though I only ever use my cd rom for reinstalling windows and that can be done from a usb drive.... Its hard to diagnose a problem without physical access as this sounds like a physical problem.

This laptop is brand-new, actually. XD I just bought it this year.~
It seems I may have bumped it, as I have a terrible habit of bumping it on things when I move it.
I know this discs aren't damaged, so, yeah...
As for the CD drive problem, I would suggest looking up a guide on how to replace the drive yourself and buy a new one. It's really simple and somewhat fun (for me anyways). Also, CD Drives are not that expensive. Like Dark said, you really shouldn't need your CD Drive nowadays for much anymore.

Haha, I don't necessarily trust myself to do that sort of thing...
Nor do I have any computer geeky friends to help.
