Tarrifs just started today for us in Canada which it's brutal. What is more brutal is our incompetent leader is also firing back with their own Tarrifs. This is only going to drive up the cost of living on both sides. Really I feel like our federal government could have met his demands (increase border security which we did and put more money into our military) which like we should have been doing anyways. We have pumped billions more into Ukraine rather than our own domestic military. Yay Truedope.🙄
But yeah I feel like Trump has some things that can help improve the US even Canada (if we can trash the terrifs and maybe get a pipeline going) but overall there are some.very scary and blanket decisions being made which is disheartening and scary.

about the tariffs...
from what i have been able to read, Canada WAS meeting Trumps demands about increasing border security - which goes to show that America's tariffs against Canada aren't really "about" border security and drugs, but rather that is the excuse to justify these tariffs in light of NAFTA policies. from cbc ((you need an account to see links)):
"There's a reason Trump is framing the expected tariffs as a response to an "emergency" drug and migrant crisis: It gives him the leeway to impose tariffs even though the new NAFTA is in place to prevent exactly these sorts of levies."
in my view, a massive 25% tariff had to be met with a response by Trudeau (especially in light of many provincial premiers calling out for an equal response). to let the 25% tariff sit unchallenged would look politically and economically weak. Trump is using bully tactics. a person might say that "two wrongs don't make a right" and that's great on paper, but reality doesn't work that way. the worst part of it all is that Trump and Trudeau won't actually be affected by these tariffs at a personal level, while the ~380 million Canadians and Americans will.
i'll also say that i'm lucky i live in Quebec (which is almost a nation of itself within Canada, not that there aren't also issues here) - most of what i buy for groceries is locally grown and there's a big emphasis in quebecois culture on self-reliance/supporting local businesses.

As a Canadian, I feel sick to my stomach looking at the news each day. I'm sick of the "Canada should be the 51st state" jokes. I don't think a lot of people realize just how fucked up all of this is. Trump wants to do with Canada what Putin attempted (still attempting?) to do with Ukraine. This is all feeling waaaaay too similar to the Handmaids Tail as well as 1933-1945 Germany. I'm also getting 1984 by George Orwell vibes. It's all so messed up.
We also have a very important election coming up this year where our Temu version of Trump is trying to get elected. I have strong hope that Canadians will do the right thing and elect Mark Carney (fingers crossed) and not Polierve.
Scary times.
I will keep my reply in this thread limited given my contribution to the previous board, but it is obvious (then and now) that the Trump supporters prior to the election were just blatantly lying about knowledge of Project 2025, that he would be a fascist, and his targeting of minorities. All they whined about was egg prices and inflation for months and now their figurehead is doing absolutely nothing to address costs. Oh wait! He actually did do something to address costs by enacting tariffs to increase the costs of goods for Americans. If anyone actually identifies with the Republican party after this I would just recommend not interacting with them or taking what they say seriously.
My hope is that his inept cabinet picks will be completely unable to lead or do anything effectively for 4 years. Especially hoping that the fanfare around Musk essentially being the president will anger Trump's ego. It obviously bothers him that people think this way based on his reactions.
I'm not really sure when people on that side are going to wake up. Clearly it won't be until something Trump does directly impacts them. I'm guessing it will be once they try to stop/cut Social Security and all the old Repubs get upset - but knowing them they will just blame Hillary Clinton/the Deep State/Obama.

As an update to my initial post; I've yet to have any complaints about Trump.
- ICE has raided my area and downtown area and they did not take out grandmothers or children, they took out face tattooed criminals (with proven criminal history) a neighboring town to me had $1 Million in Fentynal found inside their migrant housing. While I am sure good people were in that housing they were not caring or accepting of the criminal activity in that building. The building has been shutdown and ICE took out many of the residents.
- Executive orders have been good, getting border security to the North and South I am all for and this is done by the threat of tariffs which every nation has agreed to becuase they know the economic advantages America provides their nation otherwise they would tell Trump its a bad deal and they wont comply. Panama has just folded and agreed to stop working so closely with China which I feel is a good thing. (Russia and China are the biggest geopolitical threats so squashing them as much as we can is not bad for national interests).
-USAID I have no clue what is true or false but if condoms to Palestine and Muppet shows in Ireland about DEI are being funded with my tax dollars, WTF.
I hope prices come down in the future, but theres only so many things. Gulf of America is hilarious in my opinion.
I think we are seeing a differnt Trumpat this point who knows how the system works and has had 4 years of chaos in his life that he is getting people in who are going to make his agenda work.
Seeing some of the other responses in this thread let me say; as a 2x Obama voter I have not left the Democrat party, the party left me. I should not be saying "hmm Trump's XYZ makes more sense than other plans, so lets try it" I don't need threats of cancelling or being told i'm on the "wrong side of history". I need the best plan for myself, my family, my community, then everyone else.

I just want to clarify this was not the middle eastern gaza.
this program was for mozambique's gaza province.
Name is pretty confusing but it ended up being different than expected.
I'm staying outta this whole thing opinion wise, but I thought I should clarify that specific fact so that people don't spread that misinformation and further cause tension about the issues in the middle east.

This really is not meant to come off as like an attack, but I am genuinely/unironically curious if you do a Google search after hearing talking points like this? I get that you prefaced your statement by saying "I have no clue what is true or false", but all of these talking points are so easily debunked if you just look them up.
