I woke up a bit rancid sick so my brain is off, but I'm working on digesting all this haha

    - - - Updated - - -

I'm just Ken performance was iconic I can't believe they invited the other kens!

Looks like Messi (aka Snoop from Anatomy of a Fall) also made it! Spoiler for large image

I saw this before bed, but the Godzilla Minus One crew came dressed up together (spoiler below for large picture):

Surprisingly, Margot Robbie did not step out in another Barbie number like so many were hoping for. IMO the ruching at the waist is interesting, but I'm not sure how I feel about it. Why is her hair so messy? I wish she did something else with it. The glittery material is lovely though. The dress kinda seems like it would also fit in with the Godzilla shoes lol! (Spoilers for large image)

    Thoughts on the winners:
    * Total shut out of Barbie was a bit surprising especially in Makeup and Costumes, but I guess Poor Things had really great production design & costumes
    * Oppenheimer and Poor Things pretty much swept
    * A little bit surprised that Emma Stone beat out Lily Gladstone, but I definitely think it could have gone either way!
    * Also surprised to see How Do You Live beating out Spiderverse. I enjoyed the former but I think the latter was a better movie. I've heard that the Academy voters rarely watch animated films and usually vote for their kids' favourites, which is why it's usually Disney-Pixar winning here (but it was a pretty weak slate from them in 2023)
    * Da'Vine Joy Randolph swept ALL of the precursors and the Oscars- queen!!
    * Zone of Interest I did not see, but I watched a segment on the effort that went into Sound Design, so I'm happy their sound designer won!
    * Anatomy of a Fall not going home empty handed, thankfully!
    * Christopher Nolan finally getting his first (and second) Oscars!

I ended up catching part of it while working, but completely tuned out other parts. Was also at the mercy of my parents' channel-flipping/fast-forward whims, so even when I was paying attention I missed some things.

I ended up watching Poor Things the other day and definitely understand why it won for Production Design, but I feel like costumes could have gone either way.

I've heard the same thing about animation, but I haven't seen any of the noms this year, so can't judge.

I can't remember if they've done a segment acknowledging stunts before. I know it's been said there should be an Oscar category for stunt coordination and performance, so was nice to see a shoutout.

I watched Poor Things on Saturday and really enjoyed it. Happy for Emma Stone.

The "I'm Just Ken" performance was fantastic. Hope Ryan Gosling never looses his Kenergy

I've definitely seen discussion around people hoping stunt work gets included as an Oscars category, but I've also heard an argument against it in that people might push themselves even further to do crazy stunts. I think choreography would be a good middle ground, but that's just me. I do think stunt work is underappreciated, though! And very dangerous!

I also enjoyed Poor Things a lot. The director's work has kind of divulged from where it started imo, but for the better, almost? Or maybe I'm just not into his whackadoodle surrealist feel-bad movies that he used to make anymore. And for sure Gosling looked SO pleased with himself lmao he seems like a really down to earth dude

I didn't watch it at all but scrolling on FB and seeing RDJ (Robert Downey Jr) win his first Oscar brought me to tears. I'm SO proud of him for how far he's come along in life to become one of my childhood actors I watched growing up

Does anyone watch the series On Cinema? I wouldn't be able to succinctly explain it but it's... fictional dark comedy movie reviews. They have a yearly Oscar special, I need to catch up so I can watch last night's.

Yeah, I've also heard that concern, and it definitely makes sense. Choreography would definitely be a good category to add that could include it, though!

In general, the Oscar specials are always bonkers. One of them ended with the entire cast knocked out with carbon monoxide poisoning because someone left a running car inside where they were filming.
