i thought this was the coolest shit ever when i was in high school. i would listen to this with a tattoo choker on in my h&m jeans and feel like peak teenager.
now when people say it sounds like ford f-150 commercial music i can't help but agree

Scrolling through tabs and I had this half-written:
I don't remember what I felt because that was a week or two ago at this point. I did however narrow down which albums I listened to a lot actually came out in high school, and also put a focus on albums that came out that I was anticipating ahead of time, got a headstart on that chokehold.I recently spent a few minutes in my hometown's secondhand record/cd/dvd store (when I was in high school they also had cassettes, but they seem to be gone now), which is making me realize a lot of my chokehold-y albums were a little bit older than I realized.

Decided I'd name one really obvious and cliché one, and another more offbeat one.
I remember counting down to The Black Parade with all of my high school friends and MCR was generally the one band we all liked, plus there was some Jersey pride stuff going on, and of course that album took the world by storm!
For the offbeat one, Hank Green released his first, very limited, album in 2008. I got one of the spinoff/second printings. In a recent video, he talked about how that spun off into so many of his endeavors and it was super cool, and it made me realize that was definitely a contender for this thread, though the overall community was a big thing.

I was a sophomore in high school. My brother was a junior. One night on MTV 2 he saw the (you need an account to see links). We bought a CD of the album at Best Buy by pitching in $5 each. We bought it for the Gay Bar hijinks expecting it be some shitty gimmick album with just the one amusing song. The next two years were spent with us murdering his Volkswagen Jetta's sound system as we subjected our hick hometown to us blaring the whole album on infinite loop. These days my poor husband has been dragged to at least a half a dozen of their live shows with me, including a trip to be at the show they recorded their live album at, which was a double header set of them playing a mix of songs from their second album onward and then all of this first album. Good times
bonus shout out to the Orgy cover of Blue Monday. This was the Friday song. My brother and I were fiends for it but only ever played it as he drove us home from school on Friday afternoons, every Friday. Eighteen years later and this song still feels like a celebration when I listen to it.
My junior of high school year my cross country team made a team mix CD full of Sarah McLachlan and that shitty as we go on Graduation song, plus one song every member of the team picked out personally. I made them add the Orgy song for mine lol
OH OH OH and another shout out to the album Haunted by Poe. My stepdad gave me a copy of it. I was obsessed. OBSESSED. The sheer amount of my Neopets' lookups I plastered with lyrics from this album xD
