Gardening & growing things, to eat or for fun! Houseplant lovers also welcome.

It was suggested to me to make a gardening/ growing things thread for anyone that might like to share their current projects, tips, tricks, food they're growing, or even just houseplants you've managed to keep alive! Some other suggestions might be dinners you've made with home grown goodies, your favourite plants, questions you have about starting a veggie patch, maybe your never ending slug problem hehe.

I'll put some pictures of my garden in this post - I'd like to put them behind a spoiler tag so it's not so huge to scroll through (I'll come back and edit this post later but if anyone can tell me how to add a spoiler that would be ace!)

Here is what I moved into last year.. a massive slope covered in weeds... totally unuseable!

A few months in, thanks to my wonderful partner:

Summer last year! The grass was finally growing!!

and a more recent picture of the winter crop, we've got radishes, some out of season (it's sub tropical here so it works) tomatoes, a massive kale plant!!!, loads of nasturtiums, broccoli, and a whole bunch of herbs/ other yummy goodies even a very out of season sunfower or two!

There's still a long way to go but getting out in the garden every day, even just to water it and say hello to the plants has been so good for my brain. 10 minutes of weeding a day keeps the doctor away.

This is my place! I grow my own food and store it through winter!

    This year our crops are

various herbs and spices (will go in more depth if asked but there's a lot of them)
    various onion species
    various garlic species
    a projected 500ish potatoes
    zucchini
    yellow squash
    3 different types of cucumber
    3 different types of tomato
    green bean
    okra
    lettuce

Other crops will go in as needed later on. That's just what I got so far

YAY! So nice too see other people who love getting dirty outside too
Wow I've never tried onions or garlic, but I did start a little potato bin this month doing the stacking method.. fingers crossed we actually get some potatoes as I didn't use seed potatoes just ones that started to sprout from the greengrocer when we didn't eat them in time.
And yum, I love summer veggies... luckily it's warm(ish) here so you can get away with some summer veg over the cooler months, but I only let what's self seeded grow rather than plant summer veg in winter. Last summer I had a MASSIVE tomato crop, so many zuchs and cucumbers coming out the ears. Have you ever cooked with the zuchs that get missed and grow MASSIVE? They're super tough but are delicious stuffed and roasted.

My parents have gotten super into gardening in the past few years. My dad always had a small vegetable garden and we'd always get him seeds and starter plants every father's day, and then my mom has gotten super into flowers. They are both pretty aligned with the Anti-Lawn Movement, which I keep telling them to look into because it lines up with what they say, but neither of them actually have.

I don't have any decent pictures, but I'm heading there around the end of the month, so I'll try to remember to take some for this thread. By then I bet the tomatoes will be going strong, which is one of the things I'm most excited about gardenwise.

The garlic is tricky it took a few years to figure out wtf I was doing.
Potatoes are in a giant plot of dirt outside in the ground
The zuchs are awesome, they got so big if I forgot about em. I did cook with those, but I mostly either vaccum seal frozen or dehydrated and keep them for the rest of the year because grocery costs are just tooo much

Oh those looks beautiful! We have a garden growing here but the heat is so terrible. We do have some small tomato plants that are growing and some have a cluster of green tomatos on them

@(you need an account to see links) my dad's zucchini also got really big if he didn't watch them. I wish I liked them more. We did try making pan-fried zucchini flowers when I was home last Summer, and those are good!

I had to develop a taste for them, same with cucumber, i still can't stand tomatoes but I love growing the plants so much that I just give them away for free or make sauces.

oooh, that's fair and sounds pretty fun to be able to share it!

Also I never properly said it, but @(you need an account to see links) that transformation is incredible!

my nan's got a great recipe for zucc flowers!
loads of whatever herbs you have from the garden (parsley, dill, oregano is a good combo) mixed with ricotta as stuffing, then just olive oil and bread crumbs sprinkled on top and roasted. delicious!
@(you need an account to see links) you should try (next time you find an overly large zucc) slicing it lengthways, scooping out all the seeds/ most of the flesh, mixing the scoopings in with tinned tomatoes, capers, oregano and garlic, then 1 or two anchovies (if you like them) layed on top with a healthy dose of parmesean cheese, olive oil and roasted.
