I'm not sure if there's a counter somewhere, I just kept the number in my head manually. Just when you get your 6th egg, it'll tell you that you unlocked the userbar.

I'm not sure but for the Valentine's Day hearts I think they stopped showing up after you got the bar!

As far as I know, once you have the userbar, you will no longer see them pop up. I got it the first year and have not seen an egg since.
