I'm not sure how they could get into your account via a NM?

But to back up Flordibel, I'd just delete and ignore it. I don't respond to any NM fishing for some type of information.

I don't know either, it just felt very strange like they were seeing if I'm "active" or not. I remember years ago there was the 'dont look at random userlookups' scare so I was a little nervous!
Its good to know that its not any well-known hack at least..

Ahhh gotcha. They could just be trying to buddy up to see if you'd be willing to take a trade for a pet or something.

If your status is set to stealth and you don't have any recently released wearables/pet colors on your account I'd also be curious if they're nosing about trying to see if it's an abandoned account or not. Like everyone else says, you have no obligation to reply to them and I'd refuse out of spite, but I would make sure I had 2FA enabled just in case.
