Revolutionary Girl Utena for me! It's god some absolutely gorgeous art, the kind that you don't see much of nowadays - really lovely painted backgrounds and such. Plus, sword lesbians!
It's on Crunchy, and Discotek (edit: it was Right Stuf, not Discotek) also released a remastered version a while ago.

Yup! That video was just the first episode in general.
As far as a remaster goes, they cleaned it up and released it on Blu-ray with a ton of extras, like commentary tracks and karaoke. You can find them on (you need an account to see links)

OooOooo cool thread. Echoing all the Sailor Moon recommendations. But the first thing that came to mind was the movie Akira. It's cyberpunk-y and got a bit of violence - definitely for adults. It was one of the first animes I've ever seen and totally changed my vibe on the genre!
Random side story - I saw a few mentions of Grave of the Fireflies. I bought it a few years ago on DVD at a flea market and it's still sealed in the packaging because I always heard how sad it was and never booted it up hahaha.

no shit, same
I bought it used years ago (at least seven) and I've heard it's incredible but tragic. I love a good sad story, but I haven't quite been able to bring myself to check it out yet.

- (you need an account to see links) is still my favorite anime of all time by far and i recommend it to everyone regardless of how familiar they are with anime. great action, great characters, great music, all wrapped in an easily digestible 26 episodes.
- (you need an account to see links) is another favorite. it has a darker tone and is often stated to be a deconstruction of the mecha (giant fighting robots) genre, but i feel like its a commentary on the general anime trope of having young teenagers save the world. its one of the most accurate depictions of adolescents in any anime ive ever seen, and is a great starting point for anyone curious to the world of anime that delves deeper than the likes of saturday morning cartoon action.
- (you need an account to see links) is a lesser discussed ghibli movie, perhaps because its a more down-to-earth slice-of-life ordeal, but its great regardless. just an absolute feast for the eyes with beautiful detailed backgrounds and depictions of japanese greenery. the story is simple, mostly focusing on a teenage girl and her interest in reading and writing, as well as her ventures into dating, but again - very well done and cozy. great for a rainy afternoon.
I may be late to the party on this one but Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is my favorite movie ever. Also a friend and I are taking off work in October to go see Akira at a random theater screening at 3pm so I feel I have to give Akira a shout out as well. I assumed all anime fans are like, born already having seen Akira at this point but my friend has never seen it so just in case, if you too have not seen it, HIGHLY recommended.
