Note that this is not simply just a username change - your account as a whole is "reborn" on a new account. Your pets/items/trophies/avatars/stamps go with, but your account age does not. So if you have an aged account for food club betting, you will lose out on that.

Yeah, I think you can see it that way.

I see it like this:

Imagine creating a new Pokémon save file on one of your favourite games, but also being able to transfer all your old previous Pokémon and badges to that new save file upon creation.
You lose some progress, of course, but you're also not completely starting over.

How frequently do they forget to move stuff? I have wanted to do this but honestly feel like they'd glitch out some of my NC/NP and I'd never notice until it was too late

I don't think this is a very common thing but it could be one of those "you don't think about it happening until it happens to you" They warn you to take out all your items from your closet because those are what have the most difficulty with potential issues, and generally they don't move over on-hand NC.
