    It's Summertime!

    It's finally summer time!
(at least for those of us in the northern hemisphere!)

    So, I want to know...

What is your favourite thing to do in the summer? Are you a total beach bum? Lake lifer? How do you like to stay cool? Popsicles, ice cream, good old fashioned AC?
Maybe you have a favourite memory from the summer time? I wanna hear about it!

    I will go first!

As a kid, we would always go to the outdoor waterslide park in June at the end of the school year. We would stay all day until we were EXHAUSTED. There was this one slide that was super scary to me, it was really fast, had big drops and was in pitch black. I remember the year I turned 12, I was FINALLY brave enough to go down it by myself. So I did, and it was a blast! Once it was time to leave, we'd get a twist (chocolate and vanilla swirled) soft serve ice cream cone.

Summer is such a struggle for me. I get heat sickness so easily and sunburn in, no joke, 10 minutes. That said it's my favorite time to have a fire in the firepit and make smores which I literally did last night.
I recently moved to a place with AC thankfully so I can just stay glued to it on the bad days but my ideal is being in a pool with friends and drinks reapplying my SPF 10000 every 5 minutes.

I've always dreamt of getting to go to a waterpark! Maybe I'm too old now but they seem like fun.

When I was younger I was a lot more heat-resilient so I was a total beach bum, now, we don't really have sandy beaches as far north as I am but I really loved to flip rocks over and tidecomb and see what kinds of critters I could find and compare them to a little seashore encyclopedia I carried with me everywhere, and I'm talking 5 years old when this started. You know how 5 year olds just LOVE encyclopedias? I'd show my grandparents everything I found next to the entry and we'd read it together before moving on.

Now I'm a little less heat resilient so I hide away in a sanctuary of old fans and blocked out windows to stay cool; but I still love the beach on the breezier days. I have a massive seaglass collection. I want to go down to the beach soon because we're supposed to have a break from the sun where I am.

My favourite summer treat is those jumbo freezies, you know the ones that cut the corners of your mouth open Joker style? I don't think the white flavour can be beaten, I think it's cream soda? I never really figured it out.

As a child I always went to a summer camp and I usually would go with my cousin. Her and I were together a lot growing up and we also got ourselves into a lot of trouble if we were left to our own devices as kids lol
There was one summer we were at a camp and we did this thing were we would hold each other's hands and guide the other with their eyes closed. I got walked straight into a stop sign lol
Or the other summer we went swimming at a lake and got covered in leeches! But that wasn't the worst part. I was a dumb kid and thought I would try the deep end because peer pressure! I almost drowned 💀 Thank you random life guard who saved my life that day. I now have a great fear of water.

But it's all good. I still love summer because I would rather be warm than cold and surrounded by snow. Nothing beats a day of sun bathing while eating Dippin Dots! I could eat Dippin Dots year round though lol

I feel like it's been a long time since Summer was distinct enough to be anything other than "the same but it's too hot and outside is gross", but back growing up I was a total Summer Camp Kid. I used to split my time between spending time on a farm and going to one of the more stereotypical summer camps with ropes courses and archery and the like. Both were pretty formative for me in different ways. The former mostly from the people I met, turns out it tends to be other weirdos who convince their parents to pay to let them muck cow shit for 2-4 weeks. Some of the people I met there made me feel a lot less alone and awkward about adolescent nonsense. The latter was more formative about figuring out passions. In addition to the typical camp stuff there was usually 1-3 weeks of time spent on camping-type trips. Particularly what sticks out is the Summer we did the last 125-ish miles of the Appalachian Trail (we started a bit before the hundred mile wilderness and went through to Katahdin). Before that it had mostly been canoeing, so there's a lot more leeway with what we brought as far as supplies went. I fell in love and I think if life had played out a little differently I'd've thru-hiked the three major US trails. Even now I try to figure out if I could ever get healthy enough for the PCT. Nowadays I don't really like Summer so much. I shrivel too much at heat, and depending on where I've lived it's been sticky or smelly or the distant surroundings are burning, et cetera...but this will be my first Summer in my current city so we'll see if maybe it's the one that has the win.

    What a fun board!

For me, it really goes back to almost 8 or so years ago when I used to work for a water park. Of course, we'd be busy as ever for summer, but I loved that job for my coworkers and how we passed our days with laughs and fun. We never let it be one of those jobs we hated coming to and made the most of each day. I remember after the park was closed, we'd play on some of the water rides and in the pools if some of the lifeguards agreed to stay with us haha. Some of them were cool doing it since they used to goof off with us.

If we weren't playing in the park, then we'd all go out to eat or chill at someone's house and play video games until we went home. I miss those days honestly.

Oh man, I WISH it were Summer here right now (Southern Hemisphere lad) it is so cold I could cut glass with my nipples. But during Summer here in Oz, it's a regular tradition to spend 90% of our time down at our local drive on beach in one of the most stunning coastlines in the world *biased*. We also have a 14' above ground pool that we set up each year and a blow up water slide thingo for the kids which is fun.

PICK YOUR OWN FRUITS!!! That's one of my favorite activities during the summer months.

I'm an avid canner, I LOVE making jam, jellies, etc. whenever I get fresh fruit from the local farms. So when I hear that the farms around me have fruits available for picking, I am there at the crack of dawn ready to pick the juiciest strawberries/blueberries/etc.

There is something quite cathartic about picking berries off of a vine in the summer heat. Maybe it is the sun stroke, or that I will get my moneys worth for the trip, or the incredible jam that is coming later. Either way, the amount of joy I get most weekends after a morning trip of foraging for fruits is incredible. The strawberry season recently "ended" and now I'm impatiently waiting for blueberries to begin. Last year I picked around 80 pounds worth of blueberries in the month of July. Yes, 80 pounds.

My dogs also go crazy when I come home from a berry trip. They know that means treats for them and they absolutely fight over who gets the first blueberry.

I am a very very pale person so the sun is not my best friend. Melanin and vitamin D are a myth to me. But as a child I loved summer anyway.
During the holidays my cousins and I stayed a week at our grandmother's house. It was the best week of the year. She had a small pool but it was heaven for us- we spent day and night playing in the water.
We were up to 10 children sometimes. There were never enough beds so we improvised camps in the room, we all slept together or on the floor with some sheets and that was fantastic. We also made our own ice cream hahaha
It was chaotic but beautiful at the same time. We all lived in different cities so it was our time to be together.
