As a male, I've never had to use wrist support or a brace of any kind - I've been lifting at a gym for 12 years. They do get sore every once in a while and the awkward feeling can last a couple days at most, but I think this is related to being on my computer a lot. I'd say try working out without any support to start and feel it out yourself. It's also best to never start with heavy weights. Proper form is more important. @(you need an account to see links)

As a newbie, using wrist support will ease the weight on your forearms, and that's actually bad for you since they won't be activated/trained as much during your exercices. You should only use them when lifting very heavy weights during strength training and when your forearms would impede you of doing more reps while the target muscles could keep going (like when doing a deadlift for example). But that's way advanced.

I just came here to agree with Joe and above!
Really wish someone had told me to ditch the wrist braces while working out. The rigid support made my wrists weaker and less stable over time. It also created a harmful habit of tensing and locking my forearms to lift/carry heavy things.
Definitely related to long hours with hands curled over a keyboard/laptop trackpad (for me at least).
In my gym I never see anyone wearing wrist supports. I wear work out gloves because I was getting calluses on my palms
