I clicked this thread fully intending to say 'no hate but I unironically love RENT' and, well, looks like I'm not alone lmao! Still have La Vie Boheme committed to memory, hah.
Also, Rocky Horror. I mean, c'mon.
We had a really great Eddie last time I saw it in public before covid!
I've been meaning to check out Hedwig and the Angry Inch, actually...

I definitely came to musicals a bit later in life so I only know a lot of the newer ones, but some of my top faves are Legally Blonde (I know all the songs and have seen a few different local productions!), Phantom of the Opera (I even really enjoyed the Andrew Lloyd Webber movie, and recently saw a really saw thing about how Gerard Butler like poured himself into the character and was super connected and sad about the Phantom, and was actually SO SAD when people didn't like it. It validated my love for a rather maligned piece of media somehow) and the Lion King (I cry listening to the Broadway OST on the reg).
I also definitely had a Rent and Sweeney Todd moment in high school, and quite enjoy those pieces as well.
@(you need an account to see links) also introduced me to the Lord of the Rings Musical which is honestly INCREDIBLE from a production standpoint??? I've watched about 1/2 of it and the sets alone are INSANE and there's incredible material there but the whole history of that play is super fascinating to me.

Also as far as animated musicals go, I have to give a huge shoutout to Anastasia. I'm the worst at picking favorites (and similarly opinions on the best), but I really do love that one. I saw the stage adaptation and it was pretty different (less kids-movie-y), but still really enjoyed it.

Oh my goodness. I'd have to say that my top favorite is A Chorus Line. There's a lot of musicals I really enjoy, but that one takes the cake for the most enjoyable to sing along to/rewatch.
But also:
Sweeny Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Repo: The Genetic Opera

Beetlejuice, Heathers and Hadestown are SO good. I definitely recommend watching bootlegs! There’s some decent quality ones circulating. Also love little shop of horrors, legally blonde, the last five years and a bunch more. Also the SpongeBob musical has really good music that I didn’t expect at all!

My favourite musicals are Notre-Dame de Paris and Mamma Mia! Just love them. But I love musicals in general so I really, really like a lot more

Yesssss!!! I love bootlegs. You have no idea how hard I searched for a bootleg of the Pasadena production of Little Shop of Horrors with MJ Rodriguez + George Salazar I was over the moon when someone leaked the audio bootleg And the recording a short while later
If anyone is ever craving a musical, there's this great youtube playlist that has a whole collection of bootlegs
