Awesome fish tanks! I remember when I was a kid my little sister won a gold fish from the local fair and that forced my parents to get a small tank. We’d go to the fish store and pick out these really pretty fish. I don’t know a thing about maintaining them though. I also had a beta fish my cat would always try to knock over. That was not fun lol

I had a goldfish when I was 3, luckily not a round bowl but it was a small vertical tank (the size of half a computer case) with only a few wiry plants and gravel. Knowing now what they need and how long they should live I feel bad whenever I see a shitty bowl. I'll always argue about it with the owners if I visit someone who has one.

I have an Axolotl tank, does that count?
Your tank looks awesome. I'm in love with that beta- I'm stunned that he's the one getting bullied. I had a friend keep a beta in the same tank as her shrimp and the little fucker ate the whole population- she keeps them separated now.

Course I do!!
The tank itself isn't exactly...special, or good- mostly because I'm at college right now and had to take all the sand out cuz the lil guy kept eating it-

I've done several freshwater tanks before. My son really wants a clown fish so I'm thinking about dipping my toes into the salt. ANy suggestions--good reads etc?
How's your tank?! Progress pics now that it's been a couple months?
I started this tank a month before your post! It looks more or less the same today but I did get some beard algae that's infesting the sides of the leaves in the tank.. And I think I have a bunch of detritus worms so I've stopped feeding everything.. And my shrimp numbers have absolutely exploded!! Soon, I'm going to have to start giving them away!

I've never considered doing a saltwater tank but my roommate has one in one of the shared rooms. I think I like the green leafy plants too much and cherry shrimp and the salt in the tank seems to require rigorous cleaning or the buildup takes over.. Saltwater, even with all the corals don't look very nice to me unless it's under blue light and I'm a bright sunlight kind of person.. (also my eyes reeeally suck in darker lighting so maybe that has something to do with it). My roommate did say that once you get a saltwater tank started, it's easier to maintain than a freshwater tank. Unsure why. His latest saltwater tank took 2-3 months to cycle and he made a point to say that fish should go in last (after corals), especially clownfish since they're way more sensitive. Saltwater fish also usually get pretty large so you should usually go with a larger tank than you would've gone with compared to a freshwater tank. He's also been taking care of tanks for almost 20 years so I'm sure there's way more info he didn't bother telling me.. I do enjoy looking at his saltwater tank but I love looking at the freshwater tanks more! We've also noticed the pricing of corals seems to have been going up the past few years.. Lot of new laws banning the collection of certain things over the years maybe.. (like yellow tangs!)
This is where I ask you if you're shown your son any of the cool freshwater fish..? :3
