we don't really know exactly how but.. i hope this helps even a little. and sorry if it doesn't.
If I'm not totally out of the loop, which most of the time I am, a lot of these ubs are received while taking care of your own ryu. how many times?? forever since you're a parent now! the first post mentions you need some luck! what i've been doing lately just to keep mine alive is, right as i login, go straight to my profile and take care of Luna. even playing with her for fun if the hearts are still full. you can still take care of ryus along the way, as i think that goes towards their luck too..? but the more you interact with your own, the better chances of it growing up big and strong and unlocking some cool settings for it to play in.
the only times you lose luck are when you have 0 hearts and your ryus are covered in their own poops.

So just came online to do a little feeding before bed and I am delighted to see an evolved Ryu with the Lava Lakeside bg.

This immediately (IMO) shuts down the theory of feeding in the AM. I�m almost confident this is either
a) one of the bgs in the series where you are randomly awarded one .. like where it rolls for you which one you get.. idk how to describe this someone help!
b) it could be awarded when you have a certain amount of luck upon evolution

I feel like somebody else recently got it with evolution so maybe it's evolution + some other requirement. That's the only one I don't have that I still really want (sorry cavernous and cactus one). Yeah, I was skeptical about it being time-related, just because I felt like I had tried a lot of early-morning hours.
