Anybody ever set up a Plex server?

A friend of mine at work has been telling us for awhile about his Plex server. Hes got all his family pics on there and all the movies and shows you could want. Ive got tons of DVDs and even more I can snag and upload from my family and friends. Thinking about setting them all up on a Plex server as an attempt to work towards trimming down my cable streaming avenues.

Anybody ever set one up? Im trying to decide what kind of hardware Id need and exactly how to go about it

We use a Plex server for our media collection, with about a dozen accounts in the US and Australia that stream from us. If you'd like, I can give you my husband's discord info, since he's the one who set it up.

Does he run it himself? The way I understood it was you needed your own server set up so that you can build it out from there. I don't think I could run it off of my laptop since there's not nearly enough memory. I was looking into buying storage and a different server to run it off of - but the cost adds up there and I'm trying to save for wedding/honeymoon right now.

This would be an /eventually/ project, but one that I think would be fun to work towards.

Yeah, he runs it. We have a whole bunch of NASs that we're transitioning into a big-ass server rack because it's gotten so large. A laptop might suffice if you're talking just photo sharing or whatever, but definitely not for a streaming service if you want multiple simultaneous users. It can definitely be pricey (though US prices for this sort of thing are better than ours) - we paid $2100AUD for a 72TB rack - but we feel it's worth it. Saves a lot of people a lot of money in the long run.

I use Plex to stream movies off of my laptop to my PS4. Its actually super simple to do, and it works quite well. My dad suggested I do that, since its difficult to get behind my tv to change HDMI hookups. I have a cheap (read: shitty) laptop, and it runs no problem. If you need any help, I can do my best to assist!
