What movies have been better than the book they're based on?

So, we have books that are way better than the movies they're based on and I feel this is something that happens more often, that the movie doesn't live up to the book they're based on. Yesterday, I was looking at my bookshelf and a question popped in my mind, what about movies that have been better than the book?

My list isn't that long but I have some (in my opinion) books that didn't made it for me, however the movies are pretty good. These are my choices:

    1. Jaws by Peter Benchley.

I don't like to talk bad about books but B O Y, this book is a mess. I had such a hard time reading it, and suddenly it was all about this person cheating on this other person and plots that were incredible boring. Give me the shark!!! My sister gifted me a used copy, I think she only paid $1 for it and I'm glad she didn't spend any more money.

    2. Maze Runner by James Dashner.

I was never a big fan of books but I read them because my ex wanted me to. There's not much character growth, the plots are convenient and convoluted and the ending of the triology made me mad as hell. The movies are a-ok, they're more action paced and gives a more coherent plot line IMO than the books do.

    3. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton.

Ok, hear me out, I love all things Jurassic Park! The book's actually pretty interesting and I read it in one sitting. However, some of the characters in the book are incredible annoying and not at all as in the movie, and I think the characters have a lot more charisma in the movies. For me, the movie won over the book (at least the first one).

Do you have any movies you like better than the book they're based on?

This will be SUCH a controversial opinion and not for the reason you may think....

    Twilight.

The first one in the franchise, specifically. That movie is just... if you know, you know LOL.
The books are good but problematic in their own way, as are films. But the film is just a key piece to many of us emo millennials of growing up.

This is a good question! I'll have to sit and think on it.

The only ones that come straight to mind for me is The Shining and Bladerunner. Not that the books/novella aren't good - they really is - but the movies are both so, so well made and acted. Much less a case of the book not being good, but the movie just being made that well.

Also watching Lion King is more fun than reading Hamlet

oh another as I'm wrapping up this post, I know it's not a movie, but I enjoyed True Blood a lot more than trying to read the The Southern Vampire Mysteries series.

I have such a rollercoaster of emotions with Twilight LOL. I watched the movie first and I LOVED it, then of course I read the books and I was obssesed. Then the i h8 twilight-vampires-dont-sparkle era began and I was dumb and fell for it. Then a couple of years ago I ironically binged watched the saga and I found myself enjoying it so much again and I felt bad for being so hive minded about it

tho, I've never been able to read the books again. Some of the characters are very problematic and couldn't get pass the first chapters

plus the movie's soundtracks were my jam

Oof. Give me a minute to give this a good think.

Agreed on Jurassic Park. I read the book a long time ago and can't recall a single moment that stayed with me. The movies on the other hand, are phenomenal. The theme song gives me goosebumps to this day. What a classic!

The Devil Wears Prada! A Walk to Remember! The Notebook! Okay I admit, I have only very vague, hazy recollections of reading the books, but I bawled while watching the movies and that's testament enough for me.

A lot of our Disney classics have been inspired from incredibly horrific fairy tales by the Grimm brothers. I'll take a HEA any day.

This made me remember that my dad gave me a Charles Perrault stories book when I was like 10, what was he thinking? idk lol. But the stories were quite scary for a 10 y/o, (I'll never forget you Bluebeard).

So I really really enjoyed Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep (I'm so sad I lost the copy I had annotated up throughout a couple reads/re-reads, lent it to somebody and never got it back), but the film is just so different and so fucking good.
