As much as I play neopets for the nostalgia, I don't know if a recreation would really capture it the same way or "be the same" for lack of better phrase. I'll probably still check it out, but I didn't stick around Leopets very long.

Those screenshots gut-punched me with nostalgia; I joined during this particular phase of the site and would relish the chance to play it again, for however long the classic site ends up surviving.

No, a Redditor called Noah_BB is rebuilding the neopets site as we knew it, circa ~2000 judging by the screens.

Good commentary about copyright, definitely agree the classic website won't be protected by fairuse. You can't rip old assets and reuse it for your own project like that. Neopets still holds copyright for their original website looks and all images/text of their specific pages etc.

Also I doubt the person saved all the assets themselves. Can use the internet archive to get a lot of content these days, so they are literally just doing a ripping exercise and slapping it together to make it look and behave the same on the client side.

But who knows what they manage on the server side, that's always been the real guts of Neopets, if they flop that execution, then the whole project is a waste.

So nostalgic just looking at the image captures of the old Neopets. Sure brings me back. I might consider joining it when it comes out just to get a feeling and do things that I used to do on the old site.

It's a really lovely idea, but the copyright and use of IP is going to be some sticky territory.
I'm absolutely going to take a glance and maybe sign up when it's playable! But no huge hopes or dreams here because that's treading such dangerous waters.
