Lightbulb How Y'all Talk - Neat Dialect Quiz - Share Yours!

So this is some older content that somehow made its way back into my circle - haven't figured out how. I click on stuff and go down internet wormholes.

    But it's fun!

It's a NY Times Quiz based on a Harvard Dialect Survey from 2002, which gives you an idea of where - based upon your dialect - the way you speak makes it sound like you're from.

I found my results to be really interesting and pretty accurate based on a few different factors:

    > Where I grew up
    > Where my parents' family was from (so where they grew up and accordingly, the area from which they brought their language to me)
    > Where I've spent the rest of my life

    So, here's the quiz!

(you need an account to see links)

Once you've taken it, you should be provided with a link to share your results. For some reason my link didn't work quite right, so feel free to take a screen capture of the image of your results and share that.

(And if you don't want to share your results for privacy reasons, you don't have to! Feel free to just report back if you felt it was accurate or inaccurate and if you had fun!)

This is fascinating! I knew there are regional differences, but I never realized the sheer amount of words that exist for the most mundane things. Words I've never even heard before

My map is the right general area. It seems to be more sure of where I'm not than where I am though xD

Interestingly enough, I grew up in connecticut/rhode island so am not surprised to see the dark red around massachusetts but I've been living in the mid-atlantic east coast for like the past 15 yrs. Definitely not a southerner as far down south as the map indicates lolol.

This was really cool to see how much variations we have for the same concepts! My results seem spot on, grew up in Pittsburgh!

Wow, this is so cool! Mine was pretty spot-on: my darkest red spots were in Georgia, where I grew up, and Richmond, where my maternal grandparents are from. The first question, to which I answered "y'all," doomed me. It also informed me that I say "pajamas" like northern people: pah-jam-as instead of pah-jah-mas!

I tried it as an Australian to see what's most similar.

Apparently I'm most like someone from Honolulu or Miami and least like Detroit!

Pretty much the entire east coast is warm for me, with the strongest areas being mid-Atlantic and southern New York. Makes sense, both my folks are Northerners, so I've picked up their speech patterns, but we were also a military family for 20 years. Most of my childhood was living in the South. We have been living in Pennsylvania for the last 11 years, so that's my guess as to why the mid-Atlantic is lit up primarily.

I'll need to take this quiz again in a few years from now, see if my dialect changes since I'm moving back south to North Carolina. I've always wondered if dialect is something that can change or is it stagnant?
