I've been self quarantined pretty much for about 5 days now. My gf works around patients all day and one of her employees told them that he was spending time with his sick grandfather. Turns out the grandfathered passed but nobody had known he was sick with a form of corona. The employee maintains that it was not the covid-19 that is sweeping the world... but who knows if that's true or not. She got sick last week, tested negative for the flu and strep throat. Waiting for covid-19 test results to come back - hopefully tomorrow. So until then, work told me not to come in until results are done and she's doing the same. Sucks because I had to miss a friends wedding this weekend and all the st pattys festivities in the city.. which are always the best!

I feel like everyone downplayed this thing. Everybody thought it was just another flu, despite the higher death rates that it was producing. Lots of people are still going out to clubs, stores, airports, movies, concerts, etc thinking that it's no big deal. Which it may not be if you're young and healthy. These people will inevitably run into somebody who is high risk, maybe even their family members. Due to the long incubation time and symptoms not being shown for possibly two weeks, this is an issue. Personally, I wouldn't want to be the reason my grandparents got sick and had adverse reactions to the virus. I wouldn't want my coworkers to get it and pass it to their families or friends either. I think everybody needs to think passed their own face and look out for others, not just their own well being.

It's going to get worse before it gets better. We have seen the start already. This could be going on for months.

The main issue is the unpredictably of who has it and who doesnt due to the lack of tests being done... unless youre a politician or other big name start/athlete.

Well, my college just instituted WFH until April 20th. Zoom meeting in the AM with my department. The logistics of this are going to be so messy, this hasn't been attempted full scale since our roles are patron facing with some virtual facets but now it will be all virtual.
I guess I'll stick to the bright side of spending time with my dog

I will say I think it's okay to be a little afraid in this situation if it keeps people safe. Healthy people who have been infected with this disease have died (the chance of respiratory failure is real) and it's a risk no one should take, well or not. Regarding H1N1, 12,000 died in the US alone and we have the opportunity to let this situation not outpace that if local, state, and federal govts can get their act together. One death is too many.

Would love if people could keep this thread updated with what their governments are currently doing to address this issue.

As I said I work in an emergency vets but we are having to function as normal - my college has now chosen to remain open but exams may be delayed until autumn or not happen at all.

    As you wish...

    Effective 8PM TONIGHT:

    -Crowd capacity reduced to 50
    -Restaurants/bars will be takeout/delivery ONLY
    -Gyms closed
    -Movie theaters closed
    -Casinos closed
Public transportation is still running, gov is adamant that grocery stores remain open.
State employees are asked to remain home, courts are postponing "non-essential services".

My county suspended eviction enforcement and public schools are closed for the next two weeks.

I live in Eastern Europe, my country is part of EU. We're in state of emergency for several days, schools are closed and teaching is online. Restaurants, bars, clubs, cinemas, theaters are closed, concerts and mass events are cancelled. Grocery stores, pharmacies, banks remain open. People are asked to keep "social distance" and refrain from going out and gather together. Tested and proven cases of Covid-19 are 60+, two people died. Our health system is nowhere near as good as the Western so we're trying to extend the burden in time so the hospitals could cope.
I know UK and Sweden for example have different approach. I'm not a doctor, nor virulogist but I'm biologist and I'm not sure that herd immunity could be gained against this virus. I'm pretty sure nobody is fairly certain at this point. So that's one weak point in this plan. Also, not only the elderly will die, young people with compromised immune system are at risk, too.
People here are not very disciplined and don't fully realize the severity of the measures and the situation so there are still a lot of people out in the streets. Some stay at home and work from home, if they can. In the beginning there were some cases of empty stores but it was rare and there's no shortage of anything, although some people actually try to stock more than they need. And, of course, the prevalent toilet paper issue - here too people stock on toilet paper. No idea why
That's it for now. I find this article useful: (you need an account to see links)

I’ve been chatting with my colleague who’s originally from Portugal - they have complete lock down, everyone is to remain indoors - schools and businesses are closed bar hospitals and health services, as vets we are working on an emergency only basis. His partner is displaying symptoms and he’s to remain home in isolation from tomorrow. For now our employer has asked us to continue as normal, and has yet to release anymore information. PM is to address the issue in the first of daily updates that are to be expected from Downing Street - I personally believe the UK’s approach is slow, I don’t think schools will remain open for much longer.

The WHO has advised all countries to test, test, test - Korea is tested any suspecting cases - about 20k a day - we are only testing hospitalised cases, but I believe we have a shortage of tests currently.

    UPDATE ON UK:

    - PM asks people to stop non-essential social interaction and travel
    - Public schools will remain open - however this is in debate
    - Public ADVISED to avoid bar/restaurants/cinemas etc but business were not asked to close their doors
    - People in the 'at-risk' category have been asked to self-isolate for 12weeks
    - If anyone in the household is displaying symptoms gov has asked that the entire household remain indoors for 2weeks
    - PM did not address the question and possibility of compensation of losses in wage due to the virus

No true response to the test, test, test

    Will know more tomorrow hopefully.

    Update:

Just went shopping & there are no eggs or toilet paper. My local Walmart also instilled a 2 item limit on eggs, bread, and milk.
