Unfortunately, it is the only way to get the background and the items are no trade. I have a bunch sitting in my SDB but can't give to anyone :/
It depends how many stars and levels your characters are. The challenges vary in difficulty level. Depending on the level you are, I autoplay certain levels to farm gems and cards to either sell or level up my characters.

It is tedious, but lots of people still play and post on the L&L board on neo. I hope altador comes out soon but knowing how neopets works I'm not going to hold my breath.

I'd say LD lvl 18 in hard mode is the best for farming chests

I farm LD 17 when I do the daily quest things and 20 when I have skip tickets. Just recently played MQ 20 for a quest and it's the only level that gave me 50 gems, albeit I think it's rare to get that many gems but I'm not sure.

i'm only max 3 stars on leader and i farm the maraqua 3 energy levels on easy autoplay. got 200k gold just trying to find units to use as fodder. no tablet for me this month :/ got a lame background

Thanks guys! Just got my leader to 4 stars but the rest of my party is pretty useless. Any tips on who are the better heroes to recruit? I've been getting crappy max 2 stars heroes and I loathe to spend any money buying the legendary summoning token, which doesn't even guarantee a legendary hero?? Cmon.

If you can, try getting epic and legendary heroes. For epic I like the Nightsteed, Tomos, Bloodhook, General dacon. For legendary yes it sucks using those coins. I've bought at least 20 of them with my gems with good luck at first but none these past few months. Caylis is good for all around attack,Nuria is good too. Kelpbeard is a good tank.

I'm starting to big time struggle because I don't think I'm leveled enough and I run out of coins too fast to keep advancing my characters xD and I'm only midway through Maraqua on Easy... is the best strategy truly pay to win and get the legendary characters early?

Who are the heroes you use now?

Am using Swordmaster Talek, Maraquan Lancer, and Maraquan Eyrie. Am trying to look for more epic heroes but no luck so far. I'm wondering if they drop more frequently on some levels? I've been doing Maraquan L20 and LD19/20.

Edit: Just found Jacques and Maraquan Grand Commander! Am training them now but I realised I do not have enough ascension stones. Fml.
