Having recently watched the LOTR extended versions, I figured it was time to watch the Hobbit movies again too. I still feel like it could have been two films, and not three. No need for the producers to follow after Smaug.
Speaking of Smaug, a thought crossed my mind as I was drifting between dreams the other night. How would Newt Scamander have done in Bilbo Baggin's shoes? Am I the only one who sees a fair share of similarities between the characters? I did some research and Eddie Redmayne auditioned for the part. Way before he knew of his future beast taming role! I wonder how would Newt have tamed the dragon, or evaded it? He would make a great burglar with his assortment of creatures, and would only use them when necessary. It makes me think that JK Rowling must be a Tolkien fan. I cannot see Newt involved in physical combat. He's better off with his wand than a sword.

It's interesting to think about because there are some very common, over-arching tropes in that sort of adventure fantasy literature. The Tolkien world is so enormous, it's hard to imagine it not inspiring other authors that would go on to write more in that style. Rowling must have grown up with them just as much I did. Both characters are pretty reluctant to work for the State/World Affair matters. Newt doesn't find treasure in the same way that Bilbo does, nor is he as strong a character, but he finds the heart in the matters around him. I'd still like to see him face that dragon though! I suppose his scene with Jacob and the Erumpent will have to do. 😆
One other side note from this particular watch through: it strikes me that the real thing Bilbo "burglared" so to speak, was the One Ring!
What sort of cross-overs have you thought about?

The biggest one for me has always been Darth Vader/Luke and Voldemort/Harry. Darth Vader never really reaches his potential because of his injuries and is always suppressed by Palpatine. He longs for his son to join him, overthrow the emporer and rule the galaxy father and son. Voldemort on the other hand, achieves his goal of becoming a dark overlord for the most part. He's haunted by Harry surviving and seemingly ruining his reign of terror, and swears to destroy him.
The parallel for me is, if Voldemort/Harry and Vader/Luke switched roles, Vader having total control over his own life without having to kneel for the emporer, would he continue to rule and sought to destroy Luke and rebellion, never turning back to the light side? Voldemort on the other hand would have definitely killed his master or Palpatine if he were Vader, but if Harry was his son somehow, would he then join him or destroy him?
I know it;s not the perfect parallel, but I always think what they'd do if one was the other, and how they'd deal with things. They both make bad choices and end up how they end up, Vader has a redemption arc and Voldy doesn't. What would happen if it was the other way?
