The dissonance between 'pokemon adventure' and 'noir mystery' is strong and the trailer feels like it knows it's absurd, I'm intrigued. There was never really going to be a way to do live action pokemon without being absurd and there's already a shit ton of serious animated movies for kids so it makes sense they'd roll with how weird a concept it is and aim it at adults?
I don't think it's fair to compare to other live action anime since there's never really been a production of this caliber/nature (feature length movie with a blockbuster budget aimed at a western audience and based on source material that is a major part of millennials' childhoods)--Death Note was a tv series, FMA was produced in Japan and just didn't have the western box office production values, and Ghost in the Shell has the western budget but had extremely serious source material. It could be a flop but I like what I see so far.
Absolutely loved the absurdity of the trailer. I watched it with my girlfriend who was just puzzled (I suspect this will be the reaction for many people past the age of 16)
Some people love them, but the pokemon in the trailer all look grotesque and/or diseased.
Maybe that's what they're going for? But even then, it's not endearing, it's disturbing how Jigglypuff looks like he just came out of chemio, with that lone puff of hair being all he has left.
Charizard doesn't look scaled, it looks like he has terrible skin problems. And so on.
