    My kid blinded me.

I'm not mad at her or anything. I'm more mad at my husband for leaving his supposed 5mw UV laser pointer on his computer desk in reaching distance.

Anyway, she found the laser pointer on his desk and she wanted to show it to me, but she had it on and shone it directly into my left eye and I had no time to react. I got flash blinded which lasted about 30 minutes but after that went away I was left with a blind spot in the center of my vision. It's been 3 and a half hours and the blind spot still hasn't gone away. I'm thinking of sleeping on it and seeing if it is better by tomorrow but it hasn't improved in 3 and a half hours so I'm not sure. The blind spot is very, very annoying. I can't read out of my left eye because there's a big empty spot when I try and look at stuff with it. If it doesn't go away by tomorrow I'm going to book an appointment to see an optometrist and get my eyes tested. They should be able to tell me if the damage is permanent or not but currently I'm thinking it is because I've never been blind for this long

As I understand lower powered lasers (I am DEFINITELY NOT a doctor, don't listen to me!) it should be ok in a couple of days, but it's definitely good to go and see if you have any permanent damage, good luck!

Oh my goodness that is terrible. I hope that there is no permanent damage and it's something maybe similar to temporary blindness that welders experience if they don't use their welding mask. Fingers and toes crossed for you!

A visit to the eye doctor is usually around $75

I hope so because it is really hard to see right now. My right eye isn't that good either so my depth perception is fucked :/ I have to zoom in really close to read this text also. Going to be booking an appointment with my regular doctor on Monday, I will give it a bit to see if it gets any better til then :/

From Wikipedia: "If aimed at a person's eyes, laser pointers can cause temporary disturbances to vision. There is some evidence of rare minor permanent harm, but low-powered laser pointers are not seriously hazardous to health."

I hope it's nothing serious OP!

I would skip the Dr. appt and go straight to an optometrist. This may be out of their realm and they may just end up referring you out anyway.
If it's been apparent for more than 24 hours there is a chance there is permanent damage (although severity may fade with time).
From what I've seen on google 5mw is right at the cusp of it potentially being actual damage.
Anyway the optometrist will be able to assess you better than your primary care provider. They'll look at your peripheral vision, and take pictures of your internal eye. They can give you a much better idea of what's going on.

You guys are very lucky your kiddo didn't blind themselves too.
