Which characters are making the servers freak out and lock you out?

I believe it's special characters that are causing the issues, there may be other characters/combinations too. These characters would include: !,@,#,$,%, etc.

@ and & are (or they were, at least) the symbols that cause the glitch, just don't use them. How to make your password more "secure" if you can't use them? Use both numbers and letters, uppercase and lowercase and make it as long as possible in case of a bruteforce attack e.e

Really? I remember (or at least I think I do) having issues changing my password(s) when the new one involved any special character. Maybe that's been fixed.

But yea, OP, a mix of uppercase/lowercase/numbers/length will help you the most
