My advice is not to start with a new account, there's a lot more things you can do with an older one. My advice would be to buy an older shell to start out on instead.
Recently getting back into Neopets. Title is pretty self-explanatory

Stay off the boards, don't buy anything for the first three months, get into a consistent playing style, be legit for awhile.
TNT is extremely hard on new accounts
Quit before it's too late.

I second buying an aged account. Maybe a semi-main that has some retired avatars and trophies or else you'll find the game a lot more difficult. I remember I had created a new account like 5+ years ago and started out fresh. Was semi-legit (just score sent game avs and used a few greasemonkey scripts) and lasted like 3 1/2 years on it before it was frozen. The issue was I'm a big av collector and it was nearly impossible at the time to make it to the HS board because I had missed out on so many retired avs. After that was frozen, I bought a semi-main with around 200 avs, like 10-15 site event trophies (& retired avs, themes, trophies, etc) for pretty cheap ($20-40). It took me less than a year to get that account to 330+ avs, shit ton more trophies, the avatar collector Av, etc. And older account will help you grow faster as well; food club, transfers, user perks, HT discount, etc. All factor in to aged accounts. Plus when your account is brand new, it screams "I was just frozen "unfairly" for cheating so here is my new account where I'll probably get caught again."
Anyways, choice is yours, it's always nice building your own thing from the bottom up, but having done both, I was more satisfied starting halfway through. I had a nicer overall account and it was a lot quicker to build it.
You don't need to buy an account if you're patient. The more you use an account the more you will have enough of a history tied to it so it doesn't look like a bought account in case you someday get wealthy or something. The drawbacks with buying an account is that someday after putting so much time and work, you might end up being frozen because the original owner came back and created a ticket to recover it, or someone reports you.
I recommend starting fresh and bot very lowkey (avoid ABing in busy shops, get under 3 trophies per month or none at all, etc.)

Thanks for all the useful tips! At this time all I have been doing is just building up NP and waiting for the account to age so I can afford rare items. I've been debating about the trophies and have decided to do either the stupidly simple ones like Cheat or avoiding it all together. I have definitely trying to keep on the down low.
