Could there be better usage for Guilds/Alliances in Neopets?

What's the point of having them in the first place? If you could find ways to improve the usage of Guilds/Alliances, how would you do it? Battledome tournaments between Guilds? How would it work? If you do have an idea please explain a few details about it.

It's a place for people to gather with similar interests (in theory).

Ways to improve guild in my opinion would be an instant message chat system or a chat box on the side of the page where you could either have it for your neo friends or your guild members.

Just my idea hopefully it makes sense.

Something like guilds in BiteFight would be cool.
A guild shop.
A guild chest so people can donate NP to be used for the guild. (Upgrading members allowed, visual aspect, etc...)
Guild wars with a point system or rankings.

Guild shop is also good. I know people used to have guild accounts to mock them. I second that idea too.

Guild shops & guild point ranking like david mention

Guild shop could include : Guild pet pb / guild petpet pb / guild p2 p3

Guild point can link with BD - fight x amount per day to rank up and gain pts to spent in guild shop

X amount of guild members requirement with a certain rank -> to unlock guild only continent ?

Guild quest -> combination of jhudora/illusen + Faerie quest + kitchen quest

Maybe a +18 filter so it could be easy to do RP there? I loved art/rp guilds back in the days but the filters were a pain in the ass.

A Guild shop I think would always give scammers another chance to do evil

I think instead of getting items maybe your rank up in the guild could provide "boons" such as like extra prizes from the BD or be able to offer more nps on the trading post. Send more scores for games. Things like that.

Guilds really do need a makeover. I could see it bringing the site back to life

I think battledome tournaments would be a great idea. I never thought of that before. Unfortunately, I don't think the popularity of guilds is in its "prime" anymore. Therefore, I'm not sure something like this could be possible or easy to put together. Unless we create "alliances" here on the forums and did it that way?
