I'd say to start with Java. You said you already know a little and it would look good on a resume. C++ and C# would also be good, though maybe not for starters. Learning the thought process of programming is the biggest thing. You can "know" Java or C++, but that doesn't mean you're good at it. Work on challenging projects that require a lot of thinking and you will become great.
We started out with HTML in school since it's basically the building block for all websites. We eventually began writing basic programs with C++ But you can do SO MUCH MORE with java and CSS which seem to be gaining popularity on neopets. I'm going to join the masses here and say, go with java. That's what I've been working on lately. It's taking forever for me to learn but that's because I'm self-taught now. Literally. I look for bits of scripts and search their functions and variations on google and then begin working with them. I don't use many guides or books simply because I find that I remember syntax better when I get my hands dirty.
