Dang, the octopus was a good idea. Heck, the guy who imagined stuff for James Cameron's "Avatar" couldn't have thought of a more alien lookin' creature, probably.

Touch its eye, and it will recede into its skull, into a pocket of clean water, then pop back out.
They climb trees.
They're amphibious.
