View Full Version : What is the anime that everyone loves but you dislike?

I tried to watch Fullmetal Alchemist and I thought it was boring and couldnt keep watching. I liked Nina's episode, but it is all. And everyone I know loves FMA

Chobits has cute art and Chii is pretty, but anime was boring.

Itazura na Kiss is awful. Irie is too arrogant and harsh and girl kept begging for his love. It was weird to watch. And it seems to have lots of fans

What is the anime that you dislike? You can also talk about a character you dont like and is loved by the majority of anime fandom

Death Note. I tried to get into it, I really did try. But I just couldn't, despite it having a really great plot, I just didn't enjoy or care for it at the height of it's popularity when I was a teenager. I tried again after but idk it didn't call to me. I'd also say the same about One Piece too. I'm not even going to attempt to read the manga since it's still ongoing.

Death Note and Attack on Titan. They are just 'meh' to me. I know so many people love them and apparently they Death Note is super smart or something but I could never get into it. My dislike of Attack on Titan comes from the fact that I can't escape that song. Spotify always rec's it to me and I just Don't like it.

Honestly, I dont like Death Note and Dragon Ball (any and all)
Dont get me wrong! I can totally get why a lot of people might like them. But for Death Note it just seems so...dull? Not interesting to me. I just feel people like it because they find the characters attractive and that is it lol
But I guess most shows/animes are like that :P But with Death Note it just seems thats all it has going for it.

I never liked inuyasha and that was a cardinal sin in my local anime community.

I'm not a fan of Death Note or Attack on Titan either. Not as popular, but I couldn't get into Yashahime either. :/

Oh and I never finished Naruto or Bleach.

Attack on Titan and One Piece. I wish I could put better words together to describe why without sounding like I have no real reason, but they just really are not my thing at all. I also do not get the hype over sports anime, I understand people do not watch it strictly because they are sports theme but it just does not appeal to me what so ever...

JJBA too. Sorry. The art is not pleasant, it is actually borderline disturbing to me. :o_o:

I agree Chobits was...meh. I'd say the anime I feel is most overrated is Death Note. Maybe I just can't stand the suspense but I feel like it was pretty boring too.

I'm gonna get quite a lot of flak for saying this but Sword Art Online. It's one of the animes I hate to my core lol.
Don't know why it's popular, all the characters barely have any growth, the story is just repeated constantly.

I used to not like Attack on Titan but it gets really good at the later seasons (if you can go past season 3).
I still hate Eren but I feel sad for the rest of the characters because they all have to revolve around this selfish emo brat.

Attack on Titan!
My friends were recommending me to watch it and I did try to watch but couldn't even finish one season.

Glad I am not alone by saying Naruto, Bleach, AoT and Death Note. I'm not a huge fan of that genre/style anyways, but so many people make them out to be the best anime ever and............... they're really not.

Sorry not sorry.

Thanks I'm not the only one but while my husband is a fan of One Piece and has been trying to get me into that, I'm sorry but no way. It just doesn't catch my eye, and sometimes I'm a bit picky with animation.

Naruto is my other no-no. Tbh I haven't give them both the chance to sit and watch but... It's not coming from my heart :c

Ahh this topic speaks to my soul lol. I think sometimes I have very opposite opinions about most popular anime that people like, and I think a lot of it stems from the fact that I very strongly dislike either the harem (or even reverse harem in some situations, not OHSHC though) or ecchi/fanservice genres and well in recent years those themes have been quite rampant. Anime just leaning further into its degeneracy got very annoying very quick for me, so I never got around to liking or even watching shows like DanMachi Konosuba okay a lot of isekai stuff got super old as well xD And anything that has "very average anime protagonist boy who has tons of different girls all vying for his attention" just makes me want to throttle someone. In the same vein shoujo got very tiresome for me too if the protagonist is one of the super quiet/shy girls who can't stand up for herself or express her emotions clearly, that shit pissed me off and I never was able to relate to it.

But some thing I know a lot of my friends really enjoyed and was very critically acclaimed - I watched Madoka the whole way through TWICE and I didn't like it either times. I can appreciate the story it is telling and the characters are compelling but I think it was just too much strain on my brain xD I am a very low level watcher and don't pick up on more complex story lines easily lol. So other shows like Steins Gate that are more atypical in its narrative are difficult for me to watch too, I couldn't get past the first episode..

Mob Psycho 100. But mainly because for some actually weird reason watching the animation makes my stomach sick. I don’t know how to describe it lol.

Also One Piece. And I think both Chobits and Elfen Lied are a littleeee bit weird ;_;

I really loved Elfen Lied as a kid but now that I'm older, I recognize it has some SERIOUS issues. No idea how it was as popular as it was back in the day but holy hell some of the themes in that anime would not fly today. It did not age well at all.

I remember it was super popular when I was younger and everybody kept recommending it so I watched it and I just kinda went with the flow of “yeah! I watched it!” because I wanted to feel included lol, and I really didn’t process much at the time. But now I look back too and I’m like, ok, yep, that happens

Yeah I highly recommended it to my friend but he watched like 5 minutes of it, said it was unnecessarily violent (which it was) and then moved onto Higurashi which was the second recommendation our friend group gave him. XD

I both love and hate Higurashi. It's so... intense.

Ahh yeah I agree with the Chobits... I love CLAMP and I can see the ~romance~ in it but egads it's also one of those series I feel like did not age well at all 😬
Wooloo my partner really likes Higurashi (he recently went through all the new one too) but it's something I refuse to touch with a 10 ft pole. I think what really put me off was the art style more than anything xD I'm really picky about art style and the fact that they're all chibi looking (I mean yeah they're kids right lol) was just off putting to me? I feel like I would like the story but maybe if it was in novel form instead of animated, idk.

Speaking of chibis I really did not see the appeal at all in Lucky Star. Also really really disliked Clannad. Hate it. Husband loves it and I give him shit for it all the time. xD

For me it was Attack on Titan as well. I liked the premise at the beginning, but then, the author not only moved the goal posts to get to the ending, the author also added wayyyy too many characters to remember and literally every chapter felt like flashback, after flashback, after flashback to remember stuff. It got too convoluted for me. :( I also didn't really like the art...the only character I semi like was Levi, but other than that, I'm glad I dropped it. The ending supposedly pissed off everyone lol

Y'all are dropping some big names so I'm sorry in advance for mentioning some that are a little more obscure lmao.

First - AnoHana. I disliked this one quite a lot, mainly because I felt deceived. This anime's first couple of episodes + opening/ending + general vibes sell it to you like a series about close friends who came apart and now trying to recover their friendship. And I'm a sucker for good friendship stories. But it was very far from it. It ended up being just a love pentagon + an extra, and I can't start to describe how disappointed I was. Especially since I heard so many praises about this anime.

Another two are Shakugan no Shana and Toradora. I put them together even though they are very different, but I disliked them for similar reasons - basically the tsundere main character was super annoying and was unrootable, and there were no interesting side characters to save either of these shows.

Last one is that Netflix's one, Devilman Crybaby. People say it's a genius masterpiece, but I only saw it as a boring premise with too much edginess for no real purpose.

Very glad I’m not the only one who feels the way I feel about Attack on Titan.

One that I’ve seen a lot of people say is just the best “I cried my eyes out” anime would be Your Lie in April.
I think it was good but just not the most emotional perfect anime other people seem to think it is. It was very predictable a good 10 minutes into episode 1 and I’ve definitely seen some anime that have made me sob. The main character’s inner monologue was SO repetitive.
Don’t get me wrong the animation and music are both beautiful but it just didn’t reel me in.

Well, I didn't dislike it as much as the others I already mentioned (I really liked the rival side characters, but they weren't shown enough sadly), but I really don't get how people saying it's a masterpiece that is masterfully written etc etc. I always just think about other in the same genre that do what his one does waaaaaaaaay better

Oof I can see what you guys mean about Your Lie In April and to an extent I agree, it is sad but I wouldn't put it as like the SADDEST or most masterful tragic story. (Same +more complicated disliking feels on the similar vibe to the book The Fault in Our Stars, but I digress lol)

Can't believe I left this off because I feel so strongly about it but you guys reminded me - I HATE Koe no Katachi/Shape of Your Voice(? I think is the English title). I thought none of the characters were redeemable of their shittiness so I didn't want the main couple to end up together or have a happy ending lol. I know tons of my friends really love it and think it is amazing but my god I would just want to slap all the people involved (I understand a lot of it is rooted deeply in Japanese behavioral culture and boy do I hate how backwards they can still be) and call it a day.

Omg yeah this is a one I don't like as much as others as well, but not for the same reasons as you. I just felt like the movie was very rushed, and everything about the side characters was just useless! The movie tried to make you care about them but gave you literally nothing to work with. I know the manga is better in that aspect so I'm not gonna judge it, but the movie form... it could have been so much better if it really only focused on the 2 main characters and that's it.

I tried to get into Attack On Titan and from the beginning I thought I would absolutely love it from what I saw in the trailers, but after going through a few episodes, I was finding myself not paying a lot of attention as much as I would have liked. So I kind of gave up on it all. I may revisit it at some stage as it's probably one of those things that you need to get past the initial first few episodes to really start getting into, but idk man, I was just.... disappointed.

I'm not a real hardcore anime fan, never have been and probably never will be, but I do enjoy some of the more 'mainstream' shows. I mean, DBZ, Pokemon and the English adaptations got me through my younger years (even though they're not classed as 'proper' Anime in my eyes).

Okay hear me out, I absolutely ADORED Aggretsuko for the first 2 seasons. I bought merch, rewatched it a bunch, etc. The 'work-hell' theme jived with me so much while I was working at my last awful job. And who doesn't love Sanrio characters? :P
HOWEVER, the most recent season absolutely killed it for me, but I feel fairly alone in this opinion? So many people still love the show, while very few are like wtf happened?? :o_o:

SPOILERS FOR S3 AHEAD:

The absolutely ridiculous amounts of trauma porn that they put Retsuko though in the season is abhorrent, made even worse by the fact that it was solely to allow Haida to rescue her! The total dismissal and judgement exercised over her PTSD at the end was frankly pretty disgusting.
Its even acknowledged by Fenneko that Haida is actually a fucking creep for '''loving''' and stalking Retsuko for years, yet the show carries on forcing them together anyway!
So many people still ship Haida and Retsuko even though he actively stalks her in the subway while dating someone else. I just don't get it! :dejection:

I'm still gutted that my once favourite show is no longer watchable for me, but maybe even more gutted that the hype train (for some even stronger than before!?) continues on despite the S3 antics!

Cape Town is one of the most dangerous cities in the world "allegedly" so I tend to agree. My aunt lives in the richer part of Cape Town and she keeps telling us we should move there but we are rather a bit poorer than her and yes where we will need to stay would definitely be unsafe. I live more to the middle of South Africa in the Freestate. It is much saver than towns like Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg but still you need to be very aware of what is going on around you. We live in a good area but even our house has been broken into 3 times in my life. If you live in South Africa and one of your direct exstende family have not been hijacked, robbed at gun point, or been physically assaulted you must be really lucky. The only thing I can say about South Africa is that we dont have mass gun murders where someone walks into a school and just shoot people - touch wood. Most crimes I think is due to the poverty and people see it as a means to get stuff

It is really pretty to visit. I would say your other half would need to come with you and as long as you stick to tourist places and read what you need to do it will be fine. Like dont walk alone or have valuables visible. Go to places like the V&A waterfront, stay in areas that are more for tourists don't go and stay in poorer areas. Let your other half help you with that.

Just thought about another one.
Wonder Egg Priority. It started out really strong and gave me huge Starlight vibes so I was hooked, but after like 5-6 eps it totally lost its direction and became super lame super fast, and all of the themes I liked from the beginning were pretty much gone. And on top of that, the ending sucked really bad, and we had to wait some month just to get the real "last ep" that was half recap and half more BS that didn't mean anything (and I couldn't care less for their tease for a possible season 2)
But for some reason people kept praising all of it as they did for the first eps which is.... just wrong imo

I feel the exact same way, honestly.

Haida's character has been ruined for me through his interactions with Retsuko. I actually don't think he and Retsuko have any chemistry as characters together anyway, but that's besides the point.

Proposed Aggretsuko spinoff, just my girl Manaka being fabulous and Tadano, Gori, and Haida being best friends in the background because that was by far my favorite part of season 3

Neon Genesis Evangelion for me. I've had so many people tell me I should/would love it, and I just can't get into it. A friend told me to just stick it out, it starts to get really good as it goes further on, but it's so hard for me to slog through content that doesn't catch my interest even if there is a supposed payoff at the end.

Also, this is probably terrible of me, but I've seen that kid sister/dog hybrid image from FMA so many times and to an outsider just seeing a screencap, it doesn't look emotionally harrowing, it looks ridiculous, and it's killed any motivation I have to ever sit and watch the show.

Yes thank you! Like some of the memes are funny but I just don't vibe with the show and all my anime watching friends reference it constantly. My ASD cannot handle being out of the loop but my ADHD and art preferences cannot handle Jojo's. Then when I don't get something and it's explained to me followed by "omg you have to watch it you'll love it I can't believe you don't watch it" I want to yeet myself into traffic.

So I watched the first few eps of Death Note and fell off and just figured it was me and my attention span. Reading this thread has me realizing maybe it is just overrated??!

Also agree on One Piece, I really really tried. I'm typically a sucker for all things cute, Happy is what got me watching Fairy Tale, but even Chopper couldn't do it for me.

Death Note is def overrated XD. Tho, the chips scene it's like my favorite thing ever, it's freaking dumb and hilarious

I've also tried to watch The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya a couple of times, but I can never get past the first episodes. A couple of people have recommended it to me, but I can't seem to sit and watch it.

Honestly I think Death Note just played into a fantasy that really appealed to certain types of people and was the only mainstream 'edgy' anime. It's not particularly good and I think Elfen Lied did cutesy murderer in a more interesting way that I think might have inspired Eleven from Stranger Things.

I forgot about Fairy Tale! I also tried so hard to get into that one. It just fell so flat for me. Happy also got me for a while but I just couldn't do it.

For me to like One Piece it took me a whole pandemic, that's when I started watching and got hooked on until the pandemic ended, stopped and continued it this year, now I want MORE!

I know that Death Note follows a "hmm my enemy said X, so I'll must do Y" "hmmm he said Y. I bet that he wants me to do Z, but I'll do W instead" which is a bit silly but I do love the show! This potato scene, thou... I just can't not laugh XD when im eating potatoes, I always mimic kira, it's the best worst anime dialogue ever

I guess it would have to be either One Piece of Fairy Tale, can't really put my finger on it though.

I dislike shonen as a genre more and more every day. It just feels like the same chewed-up and spit out plot every time. Some overly energetic young Gary Stu with social issues of some sort has amazing superpowers just like everyone else in the show. He's the strongest EVA and he always comes out on top save for the few times he's allowed to lose so it looks like has at least two inches of depth. His parents are dead or some other traumatic shit happens, he eventually winds up surrounded by half-naked children at some point. His foil is another kid of the same age who pretends not to have feelings and then there's an obligatory big boob haver.

I just can't do it anymore, it gets more sexist and cliche every day. Even shows that I can appreciate from a technical standpoint like Fire Force are like that.

As for specific shows, it's gotta be Tokyo Ghoul. People get pissed at me for it but people who read the manga will know exactly what the issue is. Whole characters and important plot points are just gone with no explanation.

echoing the general dislike for shounen action... im just not much of an action enjoyer! (one exception: cowboy bebop) (and maybe the berserk manag but im not that far in yet) i would watch 500 episodes of high school girls talking about food or anime over 50 episodes of whatever the hip new shounen jump adaptation is any day.
but i have a specific grudge against attack on titan. i made myself sit through the first season and it was just SO BORING! like i already dont care for action, adding military strategy + having the entire colour palette consist of shades of brown did no favors. the op songs were super fun, though.

One Punch Man...

Like, who wants to see an anime where the protagonist always wins :/

Does it gets better than that? I've seen it's one of the ''best'' animes out there

Naruto

My little brother started watching it, and Naruto was so cringy and annoying all the time. The show should have been called Sasuke, after the superior character.

Cowboy Bebop. I also think that most shonen and shojo are really boring and all too similar to each other

I don't like DragonBall anything, never have, never will. My brother used to love it and it drove me crazy. I love anime but not that series.

Honestly, most of the top animes.. Aside from AOT.
One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, OPM, and My Hero. I just can't get into any of them..
I watched like half of MHA and every episode I just found myself cringing really hard. I know that half of my reaction stems from the bad parts of the fandom, but they have honestly ruined it for me.

Most of the popular long-running ones. Like not to be a hipster but I'm not going to sort through a decade or two of filler to get to the good parts when I could watch several shorter and more engaging shows in the same time. My Hero Academia only gets a pass because I started it at the beginning as it aired so it's not that huge upward climb, but it's rare for me to start anything that already has more than 3-4 seasons in.

Then there's AOT. I'm new here and haven't figured out spoiler tags yet but there is a certain plot point - if you've seen it you know exactly what I'm talking about - where the show shifts in tone pretty drastically. And I just lost interest completely after that.

If it outs me, it outs me, but I hate Your Lie In April. Like, why did she have to lie??? The premise is stupid, the girl is stupid, everything is stupid.

(To me. I respect you if you like it but for me it's a total ugh.)

Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san become pretty popular lately and I felt secondhand embarrassment while watching the first episode. Worst thing ever, characters personality are stupid and story is dumb. It feels like the main character developed stockholm syndrome and it is seem as something funny and cool.

Most big shonen series that Dragon Ball, Naruto, My Hero Academia, JJK, etc. I'm just rarely entertained by those types of shows, I guess. :( I mainly enjoy the slice of life or more goofy moments in those series, but eventually always drop them.

I also don't like Naruto, used to love it until it just got... meh. Also not a fan of Attack on Titan (i'm sorry) nor am I into One Punch Man and One Piece. In terms of Shounen I love Bleach (duh!), Blue Exorcist and Noragami, also JoJo's. I tried to get into Seraph of the End and lost interest. Death Note was good but again completely lost interest!

I want to watch more slice of life/cute romance anime more though! I was always into Shounen Jump growing up so a change of pace would be great!

Not gonna lie, I used to love Naruto around 2010'ish, but fell out of it because it felt like Attack on Titan. In that there's a million things always going on at once, and the story's goal went from something simple to really convoluted. On the other hand, I love One Piece even though it's basically the same thing lol, but the characters grab out more to me in OP over Naruto.

I also heard Boruto isn't well liked by fans as well.
