Hey all! Thought I'd start a thread like this because some anime/manga characters get on my last nerve as of recent. Also, please try to tag spoilers just in case!

To start off, this is a spoiler to the current up to date chapter of My Hero Academia.

Shigaraki's entire character annoys me to no end now. I really hate the fact that he got this massive boost and power with AFO when it was basically given to him for no reason other than to make him a much scarier threat. Then his fight with Stars and Stripes was just ridiculous. He was clearly outmatched but not only did he manage to beat her, she also died to him for NO reason. Hori really could have left her wounded but alive, but no, she died to boost his threat level. The only thing I look forward to regarding his character now is just his downfall and I hope it's glorious.

Lastly, and this is common really, sometimes some manga authors push fan service too far. Every now and then is...tolerable, I guess, but series like Fire Force push it to such an extreme and unnecessary level, that I dropped the manga for the time being. Hopefully I can come back to it in the future.

Every isekai just does NOT hit for me anymore. Most of them are very formulaic and you can always count on the T&A fanservice with some generous bikinis (somehow, there's always bikinis).

I honestly think that currently we're oversaturated with these kinds of mangas. Like, I haven't read the slime one (because I think this manga falls in this category?) but I heard it's super good, and I've also have read the entirety of the shield hero light novel and manga currently and absolutely love them. But as of the recent few years it's just getting out of hand. Every manga title now is " -main character- transported to X world" and it's not even an enjoyable type of story anymore. :(

Character: Horny freak, see the grape hair boy from MHA. The horniness and willingness to sexualize teenage and young girls in the animanga artist space is seriously stressful ESPECIALLY considering there are actual convicted pedos allowed back with open arms (see: Rouroni Kenshin's author) while people who smoke weed get fucking kicked out and blacklisted for their entire lives. Really fucking horrid and it makes it obvious there's a will to blacklist certain authors but NOT FOR WHAT THEY SHOULD ACTUALLY BE BLACKLISTED FOR.

Trope/genre: Isekais. There's only a handful of good isekai. Either those weren't INTENTIONALLY isekai (written before the genre, written for other genres and just happens to use the trope of travelling to another world, etc) or they actively avoid being wish fulfillment for young men who desperately want the power of god and anime on their side plus a harem of hot girls they don't actually have to do any real emotional work to have relationships with. (Poly? Being vulnerable and open and treating your partners like people? No thanks!)
Isekai can be done really well, it's also a trope that's being used in American animation now (Star Vs the Forces of Evil, Centaurworld, Owl House and Amphibia all involve travelling to other worlds!) but tbh it's best when either it's person from fantasy world comes to our world or both worlds are weird fucked up fantasy worlds :o_o:

Also video game mechanics as worldbuilding are getting so fucking boring.

It sucks so hard that animanga now feels like a factory spitting out the same exact garbage every season to make money off of the misery of dudes who hate their jobs and don't know how to see women as anything but sex objects. I know I'm being harsh but the characters in these anime aren't written like they're actual women they're fantasies of women!

The most recent isekai I watched was "I'm a spider so what" and I loved it, but I did watch another where a guys mom got transported into the isekai with him and it was unnecessarily horny. My friends and I turned it off because it was like really uncomfortable to me.

I really hate the unnecessary sexualization in romcom anime - especially teen centered ones. If I'm watching adults it's whatever, but I watched a rom anime, where they get a specific partner on their 13 birthday, and this guy meets up with his school crush and they made out on a bench??? But the detail in which kids making out was illustrated had me turn off the entire series.

Tbh I was just talking about this with a friend the other day - it seems that most anime nowadays (at least in sports anime, which is what I watch) there's this trend to pair a high-energy character with a low-energy character, and those will be the two protagonists.

It seems like a low-effort, half-assed way to try to induce a fandom by providing shippable characters. But low- and high-energy characters are not what make ships shippable...!

They gotta have chemistry. So much anime recently has had no chemistry between the protagonists. I can barely watch because it feels like I'm being pandered to. ("You should ship these characters! They're opposites, so they'd go well together! Look, here's one being cheerful, while the other is sad!")

Like, I loved SK8, but I honestly couldn't care less about Reki/Langa because it seemed like it was the expectation that they'd be The Ship of the series.

Oooof okay. The first character that comes to mind is Orihime from Bleach. The character had a lot of potential, especially in the Soul Society arc.

Essentially it's her helplessness - that does get addressed in the manga/anime, to which she tries to go into battle, but the rest of the shinigami are against it because they felt like she would get in the way. The best thing about her? Her healing abilities. Otherwise her super power is to yell "Kurosaki-Kun" every second, which gets really jarring. In fact I think there was a countdown video on Youtube on the amount of times she says "Kurosaki-Kun" in the anime lmao.

I basically find her to be an incredibly annoying character, as much as I wanted to like her through out the manga/anime.

And that's the sort of anime/manga trope I dislike xD

I remember that author! Gosh, and people tried to justify him coming back by saying "his actions and his art are separate and should be treated as such"???? Fucking no, his behavior overall is gross and the mental gymnastics people go to to defend it is staggering.

And yeah I'm also tired of any manga/anime having that one character that is constantly horny. It seems like most authors only build one or maybe two relationships from the ground up but everyone outside of that pairing is free to be as gross as they want.

Lastly, I'm convinced that animes that go way over the top to explain video game mechanics in was too much detail haven't actually played a video game lmao.

I'm sure I'll think of something a lot more character specific after I wake up a bit, but off the top of my head:

oh wait I did think of another one. "No it's cool bro she's actually a 2000 year old vampire/spirit/mystical whatever, she only LOOKS like she's 12 years old"

Oh my god may be easier asking me what I DO like [emoji23]

I cannot STAND overly quiet/shy (esp female) characters where being shy or unable to speak up is like their whole personality. Drives me up the fucking wall. I will slap a bitch. I suppose this is adjacent to damsel in distress/helplessness too. But generally in franchises with lots of characters and each has like one archetype so there’s a character for everyone, I generally end up actively disliking the quiet ones. It’s infuriating I guess from a third person perspective cause I just want to shake them.

Also very much hate the harem genre when it is done very tastelessly, i.e one extremely average or subpar guy getting lusted over 5 different types of (overly sexualized) girls. Boils my fucking blood. Okay I guess I am not the target demographic for those self insert make lonely good for nothing otaku men in japan feel better about themselves series but still makes me disgusted LOL

Definitely an offshoot of that is just over sexualization/I can’t remember the word right now but series with lots of sex baiting (you know what I’m talking about like anything tagged with ecchi but tries to have a story/plot) which is aggravating too because it’s absolutely not necessary and more often than not is just distracting from what actual narrative they might be trying to piss out. UGH WHAT IS THE WORD anyway if I want to see tits and ass I would watch actual hentai I don’t need a panty flash or gigantic tits falling on your face every other second in normal anime

Yakitate Japan is one of my favorite series from back in the day and I want to say they started the food-so-good-your-clothes-fly-off trend but series like Shokugeki took it way too far and it’s just straight up distasteful (funny for a food series) anyway yeah.

Edit: it was right there in Brittany’s first post lol I was referring to fan service

Dragon Maid is definitely guilty of this. I love that show, but the way they over sexualize the younger girls in that show is ridiculous. And of course you have those people that use that "they're X years old" as an excuse.

Definitely the oversexualization of young girls, includes women who are supposed to be older but are infantilized by their character design and their voice sounding higher pitched and younger.

I have to agree with the oversexualization of young female characters... especially if they're barely teens. Its fucking weird!

Speaking of that shit, in a similar vein - the takeover of the magical girl genre by weird horny guys! Male fans of mahou shojo have always been a thing but after Madoka Magica "edgy magical girl story for Men" became a Genre and it's exhausting. Like, it's suffering / torture porn of 12 year olds for grown ass guys who seemingly hate the genre while still being horny for it?!? And it's all shit because of that!

There were deconstructions and edgy magical girl shows long before Madoka Magica that are way more interesting and nuanced but they're not aimed at adult men so who gives a shit right :o_o:

The one that pissed me off most was Yuki Yuna Is a Hero.

Sigh I am back with another annoyance. I mostly read mangas as opposed to watching anime so I can focus on what's being said better, but manga panels from unnecessary angles (usually seeing up a girls skirt or something??) grinds my gears. It can be something as normal as a school conversation and then boom unflatery panies shot for no reason :grumpy:

Unnecessary fan service is the worst and always makes me roll my eyes. Why they gotta ruin a perfectly good scene with panties or boobas and the guys with the bloody nose after.

So I'm still new to anime, but I can tell you off the bat from the 4 I've watched, I cannot handle the pervert female begging for the hero to do all the filthiest shit to them in vulgar detail. Like... Uber uncomfortable. I was actually thankful I was home watching alone because even watching with my spouse would have made me weirded out and that's a new feeling.
I didn't realize that was a normal thing and I've been screening my watching better to avoid that.
Example A: least fav character today - Tio, the psychotic masochist dragon slut, from Arifureta. Kind of wish she'd fall in a hole and die.

I HATE the very final episode of so many anime, and I always feel like it falls under the same umbrella:
Actually pretty cool thing turns out to not be the actual ending and they instead go with something significantly lamer that ends up ruining the entire series (IMO.)

That sounds broad, but here are 2 good examples. Keeping in mind I don't read manga.

Soul Eater
Such an awesome anime, overall well done and just generally so enjoyable.
The end?
Maka is a Meister AND a Weapon! Cool! I love that revelation and even though it kind of falls under "MC special for arbitrary reasons," it was unexpected and that made it interesting.
But... that wasn't how she won. It was completely glossed over.
How did she win?
PUNCH OF COURAGE!
THE POWER OF MY FRIENDS PACKED INTO ONE PUNCH!
WE WIN!
And the fact that she was also a Weapon meant literally fuck all lmao.
Unless you want to argue she's THAT strong of a Weapon that she could just concentrate her Soul Force THAT much to do THAT MUCH damage at once. But that's still underwhelming as hell, and makes it even weirder that it just wasn't addressed to anywhere near that magnitude.
At least with SE it didn't ruin the whole series, it just made a lame ending.

Tokyo Ghoul
Root A and beyond is trash because of how the first season ended.
Kaneki's character completely shifting to White Hair Loss of Heart Turbo Edgelord because he went through sooOoOo pain completely threw away the series to me.
It made his character infinitely weaker, uninteresting, and I couldn't even get past the first half of Root A because his actual struggles just completely vanished. At least ones that made him a good relatable MC.
The best argument I've seen is that it does get better and he does get more interesting, but I'm not a fan of having to sit around watching stuff just to wait for it to get good. I'm either skipping or I'm out.

My second least favorite trope that kind of comes in at a close second is "first scene is supposed to crush you emotionally to get you attached and invested."
I wouldn't say it's because it's more objectively bad like the above, it just doesn't work on me. It strikes me as a weird bait when I believe there's better ways to kick things off, especially in a series where there is a LOT of loss and you sort of become numb to it anyways.

And lastly full-filler anime.
I love filler, but if hundreds or thousands of episodes have a MASSIVE percent of filler (especially not even side character development filler) then it doesn't seem any better than a cash grab in something like a video game or extra seasons to a mega popular show. I skipped back in the day, and now I won't even bother looking at it no matter how much anyone says it's worth it.
Idk how anyone has the time nowadays. :disturbed:

Cough*onepiece*cough

My husband started from episode 1 and I really did try. I tried so hard.
I made it 5 minutes and the sheer volume of episodes just completely shut me down. Hard pass.

He said there's an abridged version without all the fluff, but then I feel like it's cheating.
In middle school, I remember one of the dragon balls being 30 minutes of 2 dudes yelling at each other because the manga wasn't caught up yet. Or so I was told. It feels like an emotional waste of time.

Me too. My answer to this question is I can't stand formulaic shoujo mangas about an average/plain/shy girl who falls in love with the hottie, A+ student boy. Even when some stories subvert this trope to begin with, it feels like they fall into the girl chasing after the guy anyways later (Easy A, Maid-Sama-- I've read WAY too many shoujos in my lifetime).

Brittany re BNHA:
I'm not enjoying BNHA right now :/ I hope the final arc gets better because it feels like the pacing is all off. Like S&S and the girl with that cool rifle quirk were like 5 chapter mini arcs that had literally nothing consequential happen?

For everyone reading, this is regarding spoilers for the most up to date chapter of BNHA! :)

I feel the same exact way! With Nagant, I understand why she was upset with society 100%. It's just her answer TO that problem that was frustrating. "Instead of trying to change the world for better, I'll just join a mass murder and destroy everything instead!" Like ??????????? And regarding Stars and Stripes, I HATE how Hori couldn't just have her wounded and return to the US. No, he had to randomly kill quite literally the strongest hero in the world JUST to show us how much of a threat Shiggy is when we already know how much of a threat he is. The way he won too was also bullshit. S&S straight curbstomped him for the entire fight, but he somehow still won because of how broken Hori wrote Shiggy.

I actually really liked her character for the brief chapters we saw her, but he could have used any hero in Japan to kill, but no, he saved it for someone this cool? And she apparently destroyed some of AFO/Shiggy's quirks but I mean...as we see now, he's having no problems so far still kicking ass so I'm assuming this will come back later when he fights Deku.

Sigh, sorry for ranting, but I just hate his character now and this trope of making some god like character out of nowhere just because plot demands it.
