View Full Version : [GUIDE] History of UC Trading

Ever been curious about the magical world of Unconverted Pets, or UCs as we call them nowadays?? How it happened, how people felt about them, how they traded, and what is going to happen next?? Do you think your precious BN UC is worth more than what the current guides say?? Now is your chance to look back in time on Neopets and see how these elusive pets have survived and the legacy that they have created :takdir:

The Conversion - 2007
In the beginning, Adam created Pets... But all religious jokes aside, when Neopets came out, the art styles of pets were incredibly different! If you would like to take a look and explore all the old options, check this SunnyNeo page out ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) and see for yourself what every Neopet used to look like!

All of that changed when the Fire Nation attacked...erm I mean when the conversion hit. On April 26th 2007 Neopets launched the new site layout along with their new project - Converted Pets. This project allowed users to dress up (customize) pets. In order for people to be able to dress up their pets, all the pets had changed their look a little so they would be able to wear the clothes.
Pets fell into 2 categories: Pets that were Automatically Converted and Pets with the option to stay Unconverted

Example of an Auto Converted Pet:
44623

Example of Pet with the option to stay Unconverted:
44622

After the conversion, pets were able to wear clothes and hold objects, and ultimately be more customizable. And from that point onward, any pets created were created in the new image. Seen below is a new example of customization
44624
This pet is also wearing over $1,000 in NC items :P

Who would I be if I didn't give additional resources that creative Neopians had made before me!! This guide ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) gives a heavily detailed description of what pets could stay uncoverted or not, what UC pets could and couldn't wear, and provides pictures of all the Unconverted pets :D So shoutout to Koneko's owner and the hard work that was put in there!

People excitedly converted their pets to be able to enjoy the site in a new way, but as more and more people converted their pets, the questions began arising about trading UC for Converted Pets or for Battledome Pets. Since UCs could no longer be created and converted pets were being created by the boatload, trading began to get complicated!

The Dark Ages - 2008-2011
Although this was by no means a bad time during Neopets, there is just very limited information from this time period! Many of the petpages that existed during this time have long since disappeared whether through pet trades, or their guides being cleared for more updated ones.

For this section, if anyone in the cK community has any insight or memories from this time period on trade, I would be overjoyed if you shared!! But for now, I will provide information that is still somewhat recorded.

At this point in time, the number of converted pets is still rising, but still faired well to be able to trade with UCs. Users could train up a pet (to an undisclosed amount of stats that I simply cannot find a record of), hatch a Draik ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) or change a Krawk petpet ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) to trade and get their own UC!!

9/09/09 Draiks
44625
On September 9th, 2009, a glitch on the site allowed Users to create Draiks for free just as if they were any other pet! This was big news as Draik Eggs at the time were in the millions of Neopoints, which to 99% of the player base was an absolute luxury. JellyNeo reports that a few hundred Draiks were created before TNT patched the glitch. The players were allowed to keep the Draiks however! Despite the influx of these Draiks, their value was not heavily dropped and could still break into the UC trading market

Update: Prior to 9/9/9, Krawks & Draiks traded for T3/T4 UCs, before Draiks took a slight hit to T2 UCs after the "event". Excluding collectors, Draiks created on this day simply became equal to normal Draiks in regard to trading value

They (Draiks) certainly did within the first year of conversion, as they were so hard to get and people wanted to dress up Draiks! I recall having a few different offers around T7-T9 (current tiers). They dropped fairly radically in the year following 9/9/9, and people wanting Draiks were often excluding 9/9/9 Draiks, they were almost a bit 'tainted 'so to speak. - Zapdos for wonderful insight!!

Very interesting to see the shift in values from at Conversion being T7-9, to 2 years later being T3-4, to falling further because of Anchor Management! Very dynamic pet values

Pea Chias
44733
During this time period, Pea Chias also traded very well, often receiving T2+ offers! The demand for these little guys came from their exclusivity - You had to feed your pet a Magical Pea Chia Pop or get a lucky Laby Ray zap! Additional value came from the Super Attack Pea avatar you could possibly earn if you owned one of these guys and a Super Attack Pea.

UC Random Event Immunity
44626
From 2007 until early 2010, Unconverted pet owners were unable to have UCs as their active pets. Random events such as Boochi would fire upon the active pet and make them the color Baby. This would also automatically convert the pet. However, on April 16, 2010, TNT made a change where Unconverted pets were immune to these random events, presumably due to backlash from the community. To quote Koneko, "UC pets can now leave the shadows of obscurity without fear and be set as active pets without risk of being changed". Rather dramatic, but aren't we all as a Neopets community!!

Anchor Management & Forgotten Shore
44627
44628
In August of 2011, The Forgotten Shore ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) and Anchor Management ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) were released after the Krawk Island Disappearance plot. And in those new dailies, users had the option to earn Pirate Krawk and Draik Morphing Potions in addition to Pirate Draik Eggs. Users were now able to have MUCH easier access to these elusive pets, but they were still rather rare at this time and only dropped over the years as more and more users gained free eggs and MPs

Fountain Faerie Quests
44734
Although not started during this age of Neopets, FFQs are still a major point of UC trading and received an availability upgrade in 2011. Users could take their pets and have them take a dip in the Rainbow Fountain to receive any color they desired (few exclusions found here ([Only registered and activated users can see links]:~:text=Faerie%20Quest% 20Events,faerie%20quests%20to%20all%20Neopians.)). Starting in 2011, Fyora created a week where users could go receive a random Faerie Quest once a day. Paired with a VWN/RW/RN pet, users were able to use their FFQ Custom to trade for lower/mid tier UCs during this time period!

Ice Boris
44735
These frozen beauties were INCREDIBLY rare, as they could only be created by downloading the Neopets Tool Bar in 2004. Again, not created during this era of Neopets, but still traded for lower-end UCs at this point so worth including!

clraik Enters the Scene!!
44629
Although not necessarily UC related, I just believe it is important to note that this site began during this time period, providing a better community and place for people to buy and sell UCs to one another :)

The Renaissance Age - 2012-2014
Much like the real Renaissance, this era of Neopets featured a large amount of creativity and guides being created! Although not every one still exists, there is still a solid amount of information that can be recovered on Pet trades and tiers from almost 10 years ago!

Raulies Guide Database
44630
This page ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) contains a variety of guides from 2013-2014! Although most of them are gone or mentioned in this guide, feel free to go visit and click around and get a glimpse at older Neopets culture!

Ligthspark - Oldest Surviving UC Guide
44631
Created in 2012, ligthspark ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) was created to showcase the UC tier system. The guide also sheds light on the same VWN/WN/DN/BN system that we use today. However, one of the biggest differences is that this guide predates numbered tiering and instead uses: "Lesser, Lower, Middle, and Upper", with additional divisions if need be in bigger UC colors. I am a little sad the formatting got messed up over the years, but if you can look past that, you can see the oldest look at a community agreed-upon standard for UC trading!

Aid - 2012-2014 BD Trades
44632
This petpage ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) is not as much of a guide as it is a record book for BD pets that trade for UCs (or Draiks even, back when they had that high of a value). It is divided into sections by HSD (Hitpoints + Strength + Defense for a total HSD used to describe the pet's BD number if you will) and into Even/Trainable and then Labbed/Untrainable pets.
Trainable vs Untrainable - Trainable pets refer to pets having a high enough level to train any stat, whereas untrainable refers to pets that have been repeatedly zapped by the lab ray and must train level before being able to train any other stats. Untrainable are typically HP lopsided with lower levels

Ena - 2014 Tier Guide
44633
Welcome to the Ena UC Tiered Guide!! ([Only registered and activated users can see links]). Started in 2013, but we do not have a record of what the tiers were in the past, but we do have the last update posted in 2014. What is interesting in this guide is that there are 16 tiers and the tier numbers are inverted from what we see in modern guides. Tier 1 is the highest tier, reserved for Royals and Plushies and Tier 16 is a place for Mutants.

Note: at some point, between Ena in 2014 and 2016, the UC system flipped to the 10 tiers we know today

The Middle Age - 2015-2017
I called it the Middle age because it started in the middle of the timeline between the conversion and the present in 2022, and there is not a ton of information remaining, so we are essentially "stuck in the middle" filling in the blanks. This time is not as bad as the 2008-2011 era with no guides remaining, but this period in UC trading contains very few remaining guides. But! We still have enough to go on and can compare and contrast this time to the past and present!

Wastelanders - Pet Trades Database
44634
Wastelanders ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) was created to be an extension of the 2018+ petpage Haunted (but we will get there!) and serves as a Database of previously traded UCs and what they went for, while maintaining previous owners anonymity! This guide breaks down trades by month for every UC color and pet! Additionally, there are sections for BD Pets and RW/RN!! The guide was maintained exceptionally well and was filled in by community involvement so that future traders would understand fair offers (excluding the personal biases that pet/PC trading will always bring no matter what anyone does!)

Tier List from 2016
I am unable to link this guide because it is found on a foreign NP selling site, and in order to abide by the rules, I will be posting screenshots instead!! Looking at this guide, it may be one of the first/earliest remaining 10 Tier examples that we have left!

Trade Chain Example
Attached is an example of trade chain images that are commonly used across the PC to track people's progress on how close they are to achieving their dream pet. It also shows the subjectivity of trading as often both parties may think they are upgrading! But also, both parties may be getting what they want so that is swell too :) This chain was found during this period and sheds even more light on specific trades and uptrades that took place
44640

Gone but Not Forgotten
A few honorable mentions for this section are ~Efflie, ~Trelm and ~Treid. Both of these guides were groundbreaking and widely used by the Community (including the reddit and other neopets forums) and began the "PC Law" era, where what was placed on this guide was completely accepted across the board and would not be questioned. But alas, I cannot link them since both of them have been taken down and removed for more updated/recent guides. I felt it would be important to include them here though for the impact that they made in the pet trading community!

Modern Age - 2018-2022
Welcome to the era of Neopets that we are in now!! UC trading is partially in shambles due to the mention of Neocash UCs, but I will address that below. There are guides that have come and gone during this period, but the ones that reign supreme are the ones that I will be listing! Real Name and Real Word pets have skyrocketed in value during this time period as well, and will be addressed in the "Future Age" of pets :)
Premium Perk
44741
Feel free to read about the Premium Perk here ([Only registered and activated users can see links]). This perk allows users once a year/every 365 days to change the species of their current pet. Although not exceptionally common, PPs would occasionally trade for lower end UCs or Higher Tier ones if used on RW/RN pets. This essentially replaces the need for an unlimited custom!

Solae's Guide Database
44737
Solae is a petpage ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) That provides links to 24 other UC related guides. Would highly recommend checking it out if you want to learn more! I will be covering a few of them on this board, but this very helpful petpage is still worth checking out!

Klyko's UC Guide
44736
This guide from Klyko ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) provides UC tiering information up to October of 2021. This guide follows the lesser common "Lowest, Lower, Middle, Higher, Highest" format! So if you want to view pet trading from this perspective, the guide is divided into sections by species and the creator provides a short blurb about trying to trade those pets as well. A guide in addition to just listing the pets in their places.

Also provides an interesting read on Pet Trading reversals at the bottom of the guide

Ofu's Battledome Pets Database
44738
Ofu's petpage ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) provides past Battledome pet trades back to 2018! Although it not currently still updated, it provides a good look back into the ever-changing BD pet values ranging from 2018 to 2021

Za's UC Tier List
44739
Za is a UC Trading Guide ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) that predated Danpo (seen below) and Efflie (RIP). This guide follows the silimar format of 6 Low-High pet rankings, with red boxes to distinguish rare pets! It shows the shift in how some pets have always been rare and popular, and some have shifted to become common now (probably thanks to cK). This guide stopped being updated in 2020 but was used widely during this time period!

Heat's UC Pet Heat Index
44740
Heat is such a cool guide ([Only registered and activated users can see links]). Although it arguably does not provide much more information than other guides on this list, the way it is formatted is so unique and special that I had to include it!! This guide was created in 2020 and follows the 10 Tier format. BUT! When a pet was trading well or poorly, it received a special image next to it. When pets were trading poorly, they received an ice cube, and popular pets received a flame next to them! A very creative guide that just made me smile and worth checking out to appreciate a clever design

Danpo - The Law of the Land
44641
Danpo ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) is the guide you must use if you want to trade UCs. It is the guide that EVERYONE uses. I say that with no ill intent because the guide was created and maintained by a fantastic Neopian, and above that, as of the new year, was updated. Danpo takes into account community votes for tier changes and is updated accordingly, which is why it is so widely used. The guide is a culmination of all previous Neopets guides combined into one. When you look at Danpo, you see UC tiers, whether the pets are Common, Rare, or Popular, and include what HSD of BD pets could trade into that tier! This guide is the jack-of-all-trades
I do think it is funny that Danpo's owner explicitly posts that the guide is not meant to be law, but PC recognizes it as the Constitution for pet trading right now :P

Haunted - Current Pet Trading Database
44642
Haunted ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) is the "big brother" and most updated version of Wastelanders (mentioned in the previous section). The guide contains recent pet transfers dating back to 2018. Again, this database provides users with similar trades divided into months sorting pets by Colors, BD Stats, and RN/RW pets. The database was made possible by user submissions and ran successfully for roughly 6 years. Haunted and Wastelanders are currently no longer being updated after years of meticulous work. For those who ran and updated the petpage, we thank you greatly for your service so that we can trade our pets better and get a glimpse into the history of Neopets :)

cK UC Price Guide
Although not regulated anymore, cK used to have an updated price guide ([Only registered and activated users can see links])!! This guide was created by members of the community who had a positive reputation of UC trading and selling and was a trusted source for numerous years! This guide sheds light into previous UC values and how they compared to one another during this time! Not a whole ton has changed with UC relative values, but it is crazy to see the prices drop after the hinted release of NC UCs

UC Generating
In March of 2021, a UC Generation glitch was discovered where you could make new UCs from existing pets. And no, it doesn't work anymore! But you can read all about it on this board ([Only registered and activated users can see links]). A lot of the UCs that were discovered to have been generated have been since frozen, but there are still some out hiding on shells, waiting to enter the market. I won't cover too much on this board since our lovely cK community has discussed it a lot on the other board so if you are curious, go take a look!

NC Pet Slots & Unlimited Transfers
44643
On December 20th 2021 after much anticipation, Neopets released additional pet slots that could be purchased for NC. +1 slot sold for 500 NC, +5 slots sold for 2250 NC, and +10 slots sold for 4250 NC! Additionally, premium users received 3 slots for free with their subscription! So for those who see lots of numbers and panic, here is what it means:
Free Users: Still have 6 slots
Premium Users who do not spend: 10 Slots
Non-premium Users: Can own up to 16 pets
Premium Users + Slots: Can own up to 20 pets!
With the hecticness that this created, TNT countered this by initiating unlimited transfers so that users could move their pets from their sides to their mains in an effort to make more money (which definitely worked LOL). This caused a demand in UCs, RW/RN, and even 3/4L pets to rise!

Where we are now
RN/RW pets are HIGHLY sought after and are trading very well, up to T10 pets
3/4L pets are also trading very well (unless they are wildly unpronounceable) with mid to higher tier offers in some cases
Cvcv (Consonant vowel consonant vowel) is the most popular format for names in that category!
Upper-tier Plushies are dropping in value, especially after the Danpo update in January of 2022
BD pets are not super sought after and are decreasing in value and probably will continue until NC UC pets come out.
Draiks and Krawks are still not worth much

Honorable Mentions
Moonscape ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) provides a nifty petpage of pets that are currently up for trade. Although it does not provide any past insight, it is still cool to see how pets are trading right now right now
x_patch ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) attempted, and no ill intent saying that
to be a full-blown UC trading database, but is incomplete but is still a semi-resource to check out
5kull ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) is an out-of-date petpage that listed previously UFT UCs. Not super helpful, but still a resource to check out what owners once expected for their pets

The Future Age - ???
This section is personal speculation! But it is meant to address the potential future of UCs and pet trading!

There is confirmed information out in the Neoverse that eventually some form of Neocash item can be spent to create/change current and new pets into a form of UC. Neopets released an official video on Youtube ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) pertaining to site updates if you want to check it out! There is MUCH speculation about the details of this ordeal, like if these pets will be no-trade pets, if they will have slightly different art styles, will cost a fortune in Neocash, or how the process will be done at all! Because of this, RN/RW/VVWN pets to increase in value because everyone is preparing for "new UCs" to come out. I must say, for me personally, it is very, very exciting to see this happen. As a member of the community, it could shake a lot of things up! Names would become infinitely more valuable, as would BD pets.

But as Danpo mentions, UC trading is very volatile right now. Values are constantly changing, people are in LOVE with names right now and if you have a BN pet, I apologize, but it may be nearly impossible to trade.

For the future of UCs and trading in general, we are all in TNT's hands and on their timeline. People will keep playing in Shuffles and H&H and Roulettes to try and trade and pass the time until they get their dreamies or the new pets come out. The future may be uncertain, but at least we are able to look back on the past to see where we have been :)

As an avid Neopets player and person who loves to trade, I hope this guide provided a little nostalgia and insight into UC trading and where we have been as a community, and hopefully where we will go in the future :D Happy trading!!

Shoutout Section!!!!
Without these helpful community members, the guide would not look as great as it does or be as complete as it is!!
PeeweeFurman - HUGE help with Dark Ages pet trading information and linking 3 new UC guides :takdir:
Zapdos - More information on Draiks shortly after the conversion!! Can you imagine if they still traded for
T7-9 pets now?! Bat and the other community members for the contributions on the old UC Price/Value Guide!

I have lurked on the pound chat since I discovered I could lie about my birthday to get on the boards.
Gosh, I remember 9/9/9 and the madness the PC was during it. Still mad at myself for not trying to make one with everyone.

Before 9/9/9 i believe krawks and draiks traded at T3/4, pea chias traded well too, I was only a spectator and don’t have first hand experience though
I believe that draiks took a slight hit in value afterwards to T2, with a specific few offering more for one here or there.
After time no one cared about 9/9/9 draiks though It seems like i was wrong and others have corrected me

Wasn’t Za the cream of the crop for a hearty amount of time before Efflie? and Trlem (Trelm?) before Treid?
There was one before Za as well that’s escaping me. It’s funny to me that a few of the “rare” pets in these old tier lists are now “common”

Thank you for this post

Update: Prior to 9/9/9, Krawks & Draiks traded for T3/T4 UCs, before Draiks took a slight hit to T2 UCs after the "event". Excluding collectors, Draiks created on this day simply became equal to normal Draiks in regard to trading value

Just wanted to add that in 2007-2008, VWN draiks readily traded for up to T9. I traded a draik in 2008 for a VWN RG Myncii :)

Dude! This was very interesting and so well written. :D Good job!
I wasn't much into trading back in the day, so I don't know anything, but please take this UC Tyrannian Usul as a form of appreciation.

This is some cool info. It read nice and funny like a book. lots of stuff here I had no idea about/was lost in memories (maybe somewhere with Bing Bong). Thanks Andymac106 and PeeweeFurman for the walk down nostalgia lane. :apple:

I wanted to include a meme pet and I cannot believe someone compiled the most expensive neopet to ever exist LOL

I'm glad you enjoyed reading this all as much as I enjoyed making it :)

so big question for this!! Converted draiks traded THAT well?? So in the timeline, they dropped like 7 tiers after 9/9/9 and 2 years??:o I wanna try and make sure I don't have super conflicting info on the guide!! But I absolutely trust your input because I was not a big trader AT ALL in that point in time :P

Hey Andy! They certainly did within the first year of conversion, as they were so hard to get and people wanted to dress up Draiks! I took hiatus from 2011-2013 so I cannot speak for how the Forgotten Shore affected this further, but when I came back Draiks and Krawks were trading for so much less, it was a pretty big shock.

So much nostalgia in one post! Thank you for putting this together. :$

I did not trade much, but I recall those 9/9/9 draiks being scorned and seen as illegitimate. The drop in price of pirate draik morphing potions + the other pirate morphs due to the shore and anchor, has to be one of the greatest deflations on site.

I wanted to add that VWN/draik customs easily traded for (what is now) VWN/WN T4 from 2011-2012. I traded for many UCs during this period!

This is so nostalgic, I absolutely loved reading through.

To add my own contribution, I traded a VWN faerie krawk for an UC plushie ixi not long after conversion. Names were a more niche interest but were still popular even then - I had a friend with an account of 5 incredibly good rw/rn draiks and they were seen as super elite. I remember maraquan krawks and darigan draiks being right at the top of the UC pile, too, and the (former) T10 plushies only made it up there as they were so incredibly rare.

It does seem like plushie pets may end up desirable again after NC UCs if you need to paint your own pet to get one. I think they're the most spenny of the UC paintbrushes. I'd expect to see Island and Maraquan pets go up in value if they release -all- UCs not just grandfathered ones. But FFQCs do mean any paint job is attainable. I wonder if Lutaris could eventually attain the draiks old rareness, if they keep them hard to get.

It's probably not directly related to this post, as it is dedicated to UCs, but I vividly remember there being a Tier guide for converteds back in the old days.

Plushies + Pirates on top of the chain, followed by Maraquan and Royals.
With each section sorted by color, but highlighted which Pets in that color were popular.
E.g. Mutants were Low Tier, but the Ixi, Lupe and Gelert had a note for being popular and trading into higher tiers.

Thanks for the Nostalgia trip, amazing thread!

It's probably not directly related to this post, as it is dedicated to UCs, but I vividly remember there being a Tier guide for converteds back in the old days.

Plushies + Pirates on top of the chain, followed by Maraquan and Royals.

oh gosh, a converted tier list. Now that is old school, I love it. I think to some extent, that still exists today!! But I think nowadays it mostly relates to how much people want them, and that changes a ton when new colors get released and the crazy paintbrush prices recently

Ps: justice for mutants. they always get the worse end of the stick LOL

Hey, Andymac106! I didn't know that you were still working on this guide. I have an archived copy of our unconverted pet pricing guide. Would that be of any use to you?

Yeaah, Mutants are one of my favorites, even the "ugly" ones like quiggles.

It does still exist, yeah, but it's more of an unspoken rule thing nowadays, since names have gained so much more importance.

I still remember when the first UCs started trading for purged names and the whole PC was going insane.

Awesome guide, what a fun read! Just one thing - most of the genned UCs actually survived! It wasn't a glitch either - it was a staff tool that had leaked to a handful of people. If you remember that list of thousands of genned UCs that got leaked, Alice/TNT cleared them and said they were safe to keep or trade, and almost all of them remain as UC and unfrozen - a lot are still circulating on the PC. Only the ones that were genned in real time on the boards for everyone to witness got deleted.
