Ok so I got an HDMI cord today and a mini display port converter so I can watch movies from my Macbook Pro on my TV.

The problem is that my laptop is recognizing the TV, but the TV doesn't recognize the laptop.

Help?

It might be the port on the TV... Not sure what connections are available but you may want to try a different connection to the TV. Some have DVI in as well as VGA.

I've neer tried HDMI with my Mac. Try VGA and see how that works (:

I only have a converter for the hdmi...and I'm not going out to buy another cord. It took me all morning just to find the hdmi converter.
I've watched a million videos on how to do it and I'm doing everything right. I tried all 4 hdmi ports on my tv and none work. My laptop sees the TV just fine, but the tv keeps showing "no signal".

Try to change the refresh rate and resolution....see if something changes...

Also, your tv is new, do you know the model?

Kristin
04-10-2012, 02:46 PM
The TV is a Hitachi Ultravision 42"
Not sure of the model #

Gonna restart my laptop and mess around with the resolution and such.

---------- Post added at 03:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:38 PM ----------

It won't let me change the refresh rate and changing the resolution doesn't make any difference.

hey kristin........... if you have more than one hdmi input, that means you have more than one signal thing on the tv, example-

i have 2 AV inputs on my tv, i have my ps3 hooked up to AV1, my ps2 hooked up to AV2, i have to press my AV button twice to get AV2, you need to press your HDMI button or whatever probably to get the right HDMI signal, i'll bet

Right, the cable is plugged into HDMI 3 and I have the channel changed to HDMI 3.

now i forget, does hdmi have more than one cable? or is it just one? i coulda sworn it was like 3?

Kristin

Hdmi is just 1.

have you bent the cord to an "extreme" angle, anything under 45 degrees is considered an extreme angle

Have you used this HDMI cable before? Test it in any other thing you have, Blue ray disk player or Playstation3....

If you print the Display screen where it shows the TV, i can try to understand whats happening....

Kristin
04-10-2012, 02:53 PM
Nope. Everything is on a level surface, all cords are snugly connected. Also, all the cords are brand new out of the box. Tv and laptop are only 1 or 2 ft apart.

is the tv plugged in?

This is a brand new cable. I'll test it with the PS3 real quick.

Here is a screenshot of the display settings. Left window is the laptop display and right window is the TV display.

And yes Jaye, it's plugged in. The TV says "No Signal"

cable works perfect with the PS3. Gonna test everything on a different TV.

just had to be sure, sometimes simple things like are the worst kinds of mistakes............

and i dunno, if the cable works for other things, and the tv doesn't recognize your laptop? might be the laptop? lol

Kristin

But the laptop recognizes the TV, that's what doesnt make sense.

---------- Post added at 04:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:04 PM ----------

Ok, got it hooked up to our other TV and neither device sees the other one. *facepalm*
What is going on.

the end of the cable, do you have to just push it on? or does it screw on, like a bottle cap on a soda bottle?

Kristin
04-10-2012, 03:10 PM
You push it in.

Whats happens when you try to change the refresh rate?

remove the cable from the mac, and reconect again, see if you see a single Blink in the "no signal" on the tv...

lol i had no idea, just running through some simple things to cross them out, i really don't know, sounds like something with the cable, sometimes, then sounds like it's something with the tv, i have no idea anymore

The drop down menu only has 1 other option (24 Hertz) but it's greyed out.

Nothing happens to the TV when I unplug and plug back in. The laptop screen flashes (like it's supposed to), but that's it.

Whats the current refresh rate selected? 40 or 60 hz?

Well, some bad news....if you cant change the refresh rate, the display isnt being recognized properly....And the blink on the laptop says that too....the laptop tries to send the information to the receiver(your TV) but it doesnt accept the data....

on the good size, it can be the converter....mine was happening almost the same thing, i went to apple store and traded it for another cable(cuz it wasnt working) and voila, it worked...

By screwed i mean, you tv probably isnt compatible.

Kristin
04-10-2012, 03:27 PM
60hz.

I've been googling at it looks like you're right, it is probably the converter....which sucks.
Guess I'll be making a trip back out to best buy tomorrow. *grumble grumble*

Mac's give alot of problems when you need to use them with non-apple things(tvs, displays)....its pretty normal to have problems or get something incompatible....this is the only thing i hate of using mac's

I think I'm going to try to get a different brand for the adapter. Apparently it doesn't support sound, so I would have needed to exchange it anyways. Boo

Mini display port suports sounds! the one that doesnt support is the DVI/HDMI one...i have that exact cable(but the apple one) and works perfectly

Right, but the adapter I got doesn't transfer sound. Apparently it's like the only brand that doesn't Dx it's the Rocketfish brand.

Oh... I see...well, it isnt better to go with the apple one? its a bit expensive but, its 100% safe...

According to the reviews and support forum, the adapter that apple sells breaks after a month or so. Plus it's extremely overpriced.

yep, its a bit overpriced...but i can ensure its quality...mine have more than a year, not a single problem with it....
