I say it should be more open and less restricted.
Not everyone is up to date with politics and such.
I don't see why we can't do random things like...

Cats vs Dogs
Rain vs Snow
iPod vs MP3 player
Movies vs Tv shows

^ you get what I mean.

Coke vs. Pepsi would be great

I totally agree Cara, I think the debate section is way too strict, and that is why I never post there.

@ Steve: Always good to catch up on some Coke&pepsi debates! XD

@ Emily: Yeah.. it drives me crazy. I love debating and the stuff in there is *yawn* boring >;l

Thats the entire point. Debate Section is for touchy subjects. Not general topics that can easily be placed into General Discussion. The debate zone is for people that actually want to have an intellectual conversation with other intellectual users instead of reading spammy posts that the majority of this forum runs on. Too strict? It has to be. Sensitive topics are not to be joked around. What if we were having a discussion on abortion and a user said to you that you have to get an abortion next time you get pregnant, you get offended..what then? This is for logical debates, not every day general topics. This is 1 section that you have to be mature, have civil conversation, no joking around. If you can't handle it, then don't post in it. There are other sections that you can post in. So what if you're not up to date with politics/global issues. Educate yourself.

I don't see why both types of debate topics can't be in there? I am okay with serious debate threads, but the ones up there are boring. It's also nice to have variety. To me, stuff like the topics I listed up there are debates, not something for general discussion. They should be in the DEBATE section. :/

It's not a debate. It's a discussion. 2 different words. Non serious topics go in general discussion. Honestly Cara, there are many other forums on this forum that you can post in. It's just 1 that intellectual users can go to not have to look at spam.

These general topics aren't met for debate. They can be done in 1 sentence. Not worth the time to debate.

If you think the current postings are boring, do something about it. Make an adequate argument about a real topic.

Maybe a sub-forum?
Like Not-too-serious-debates Section.

I'm really just going to avoid the debate section in general. It's boring and restricted. Not all debates are serious, but I guess our opinions differ there :/. Either way, I hope Joe does something about it.

And oh my godddd. Steve... having a good idea? :o

Like Not-too-serious-debates Section.

You can easily just post in General Discussion. That is what that section is for. You can't debate snow vs. rain with more than simple logic.

Well I'm sorry we can't all please you and the other users that agree with you. For the sole purpose of on this forum, the debates are meant for serious political/world issues. Not just random/fun topics.

It's my section that I specifically asked joe for. Seriously Cara, just use general discussion for your fun topics that you want.

It appears we are debating about a debate section in here :l WHERE ARE YOU CITATIONS PEOPLE HUR HUR!!!

Debate zone seems fitting for serious topics, mostly because those silly "Best pokemon" and "Pepsi vs Coke" aren't anything more than simple opinions without much fact to prove why one is superior to the other. If you took into account health, studies involving intelligence based on such things, etc then that's a different story, but I'm almost sure there have been no studies involving such things.

I do like the idea of the "non-serious debate" forum though, but General Discussion is suitable for these topics right now imo

Everything doesn't belong in the spam pile and I dont think it should go in general chat. People like to talk about different things and they should have the option to do it.

I think the sub forum is a good idea, I will talk to joe about it.

No problem, an intellectual debate is nice once in a while and there are times when you just dont feel like thinking much lol

Thanks Sherri :) !! A sub forum or something is better than filling the general section with small debates ;P

Not all debates have to be "serious", as such. Sure, the two topics there right now may be a little morbid, but there will be other discussions open at a later date. I have an idea or two myself that may change the pace a little. I'll write them up after the holidays.

However, if you want something completely different in structure to what Ben has laid out - something more along the lines of the debate section of the previous forum, as I'm guessing you're thinking of - then the answer lies in creating a new place for that, rather than trying to change something that already fills a needed role.

Tl;dr version: Don't piss in my pool.

On a related issue so didn't want to start a new thread- Can there be some flexibility in the application of the minimum sentence rules? For example, my latest in the death penalty debate thread is only 3 sentences, but they are substantial, make points and raise issues to help develop the debate. Moreover, if every post is huge then it discourages others from participating, whereas if there is more of a variety then it encourages participation. I'm not suggesting we remove the rule on no spam and a suggested minimum post length, merely that it is not enforced strictly but rather in context.

I was thinking of 3-5 sentences instead of 5 for replies. Initial posts should still have a 5 sentence argument at least..

Yeah I think initial posts in a thread should be required to be more substantial but other than that a recommended minimum of 5 and an absolute minimum of 3?

If you can make a valid argument of a certain topic in 3 sentences, I'd love to see how you do it. (serious). I did change the replies to 3-5 sentences. I think I'm gonna hold onto the 5 sentence minimum for first posts.

Do you think it would be okay to have a topic about If people think illegal immigrants should live in the USA or not? Not sure if thats a bad subject or not.
