So you've seen the fancy new userbar and are wondering how to get yourself your very own Ryu?

You've come to the right place!

BUT Before we can just go handing you a baby Ryu, you first need to understand how the basics work.
Ryus have three main functions. Eat, Play, and POOP.

What you are going to want to do in order to prove you have what it takes to raise your very own Ryu, is to make sure other users Ryus are well fed and happy.. and of course shovel some poop!

Ryu's will refresh at 00-01 & 30-31 past every hour, so every 30 minutes.
There is a current list of users that have the userbar already that you may use to check, at the correct times, to find poop to clean or Ryu's that need further care. That list will be in the next post!

Here you can see that the Ryu has three buttons on the right hand side. The outer two buttons are for navigation. The center button is how you will select. Keep the four hearts full, and poop off the ground in order to maintain a healthy and happy Ryu! You will see beneath the hearts are three icons, from left to right we have the plate, which is what you select to feed your Ryu, a toy in the center to play with your Ryu, and the far right is the shovel. You know what the shovel is for. (poop) If you double tap or click on a Ryu, the userbar will enter full screen mode. To exit full screen mode you can tap or click the space outside of the Ryugotchi.

Get to work taking care of the forums current Ryu population and soon you will be rewarded with one of your own!

Now you may be wondering what happens if you are away for a few days and may not be able to look after your Ryu. There are two solutions for you! First, users that you are friends with will be able to feed, clean and look after your Ryu even when they are asleep! (You can see your friends here ([Only registered and activated users can see links])). While any user can interact with your Ryu, only friends can maintain your Ryu while they are asleep - meaning more opportunities for care. The second option is to simply remove your Ryu userbar from your userbar arrangement here ([Only registered and activated users can see links]). By removing your Ryu from your userbar arrangement they will go into 'Hibernation mode'. By utilizing hibernation mode your Ryu will not lose health until they are readded to your uerbars. If you allow your Ryu to die multiple times then you will lose your Ryu completely. Continue to love and care for your Ryu in order to keep them!

Customization time!

Now at this point, you may already have your Ryu and are wondering what comes next?
How do people have their colors customized or the egg next to their name? Lets get into it!

In order to customize the colors under the buttons of your userbar you will be heading to the top right of the page, click on 'Settings', then on the left side of the page you will select Edit Profile. From there you will be able to select the colors for your userbar.

Hex Color Picker ([Only registered and activated users can see links] 60j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-) is a great place to start!

Using the range 0-50 will change the left side of your bar, 51-100 will change the right. Play around and see what you can come up with! Also note, instead of using hex color codes, you may also type in the name of the color. 'Transparency' is also able to be used, you simply type in 'Transparent'.

There are different scenes to be unlocked for your Ryu!

If you have unlocked any scenes, you are able to change it via a dropdown menu on the Edit Profile ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) page.
You will see your scenes listed beneath the options to select your colors under 'scene'.

There are 35 unlockable scenes - 5 of which are user created:

Greener Pastures

This is the default scene we all start with!
Winter Funderland

A scene only available during the winter season!
Surfs Up

Unlocking this "scene is based on ... something in particular." We are still working out the details.
Painterrific

The "Painterrific" scene is rewarded for exceptional acts of creativity related to Ryugotchis posted on this thread ([Only registered and activated users can see links]).
It's not confined to making a drawing, but it's not a simple as creating quick meme either. This scene is awarded manually.
Moon Walker

Take care of your Ryu in-between 12-12:30 am in your current timezone. You can check to make sure your timezone is up to date here ([Only registered and activated users can see links]).
Hearts A-plenty

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

The Hearts A-Plenty scene is unlocked if your Ryugotchi is over a certain amount of luck when it evolves or jumps branches
Cavernous

You've completed the rest but want that snazzy font?

Lastly, you have the option to change your permission group to use the Ryugotchi font and adjust the adorable little egg that sits next to your name. Again you will go to 'Settings' on the top right of the page, and on the left hand side you will select Permission Groups ([Only registered and activated users can see links]). Scroll down until you find the Ryugotchi and select 'Identify me as a member of this group'. From there you can edit the colors of your egg. The left color will change the spots, the right will change the base color. When you are finished up, click 'Update Display Group' on the bottom right of the page to keep your changes!

Now you are all set and on your way to being a proud new owner of a Ryugotchi!

Evolutions!

With lots of love, care and some luck, one day you will find that your Ryu has turned into an egg. Fear not, for your adorable little friend is evolving! Be sure to never let your Ryu be without hearts for long, and take the best care of them that you can to ensure yours eventually comes to evolve. Luck is also a factor involved. You can check your luck here ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) by seeing how many stars you have filled under your Ryugotchi settings! Keep interacting with your Ryu and others, and your stars are sure to increase! The higher your stars, the higher the likelihood you have of gaining the next evolution in your Ryus evolutionary line. The creator of the Ryugotchi userbar, Bat, has left us with these quotes:

I didn't want the Ryugotchis to be just another userbar that users could just collect and discard, so I built in consequences for neglecting them. Your luck depletes, and it becomes unlikely to impossible for your Ryugotchi to evolve. It would have to be treated well through a reincarnation cycle to make up for the luck deficit in order to evolve later. Certain scenes are tied to later evolutions as well. We've also planned to utilize the stats we've collected to reward users with relevant userbars in the future, so it pays to love your Ryus!

There's a chance that your Ryugotchi can evolve after a certain point. It's not guaranteed to happen every time, but the amount of care that was given to your Ryu directly impacts the likelihood of it evolving

Ryugotchi care can come from anyone in the community, but your Ryugotchi will need a bit of love from you to stand the best chance of evolving. Each Ryu starts out with a bit of luck, and that luck will increase or decrease depending on how attentive you are with caring for it. It doesn't take much to maintain the starting amount, but you and you alone can increase your luck. This gives you a better chance of evolving, and you'll need a bit of luck to get to the final evolution in a branch.

Branching to different evolution groups can happen if you weren't lucky enough to evolve to a second evolution, or if you've evolved to the maximum evolutions in a group!

So long as you're evolving upwards - you'll stick to a given branch. If you're not lucky enough to evolve upwards at the first phase of a Ryugotchi's branch, then there's a chance that you'll evolve sideways instead, which results in jumping to a separate branch.

If I'm remembering correctly - it's not like you have to have your own ryu first in order to unlock the background so the requirement is most likely NOT related to "do x with your OWN" ryu - yes? Is that logic? D:

On Page 40, the Mommy List went through an overhaul by Ariealle, with very frequent updates by GreyFaerie and other users through its rein.
The Parent List was dubbed such on Page 96 by Mario, rightfully so. The List is ever changing and very adaptable.
As the poop overflow began to lessen, and more users had Ryus of their own, the Parent List became a true vision on Page 97 to display the wonder in its entirety.

The population began to flourish and the Ryus were moved to their own city, CFAR, by Nyanobyte and Ice.
There, they shall continue to take over cK and rain havoc among the Parents."

I think to get your egg you only need 1 interaction prob. To unlock the backgrounds I'm thinking maybe 25-50 for Funderland? I know I've done a ton, but I dont think I've done more than 50.

Consensus seems to be 5 poop scoops to get the initial Ryu and ???? for the backgrounds. But the tricky bit is not knowing if you were actually the first person to get to the poo.

I can say that I have done nothing ever since I got my own Ryu (no interactions with mine nor others, nothing) and I have the winter background. Maybe it's just a theme since it's going to be Christmas soon?

I would definitely be inclined to believe that like other things (I believe welcome wagon user bar, for example) are awarded on the hour to any users who are eligible. I might just open every single mothers' profiles in a new window right now and then refresh on the hr/1 min past and see if anyone changes. Yknow. For science.

We've ~witnessed~ 5 non-default backgrounds so far (outside of green grass there's winter, beach, desert, cave and apparently a moon one according to Nyanobyte's first post). I would expect desert/cave/moon to become available in the near future or whenever people hit the requirements for it? Like, if we were ONLY getting winter right now, I could think it's a seasonal release type of thing. But beach was added soon after so that throws that theory out the window. :p

It just occurred to me that interacting with the Ryus is a great Pomodoro technique - you work for 25 minutes (from :05 to :30, and :35 to :00), then you take a break to play with the Ryus (from :30 to :35 and :00 to :05).

it was a huge team effort!

"Started by Columbidae on Page 31 in STU (lol), the Mommies were gathered and updated every so often.

Noticing something potentially weird with the coding - I�m on mobile (almost always, main device is an iPad) and I can�t update the colours because any value I put in a box disappears as soon as I click on any other box. This includes going from a colour value to the corresponding location value, so I can�t just do one at a time even. Anyway I�m going to sleep but will play with that tomorrow from my desktop.

At this point its almost hard not to think its random! I’ve seen someone get the winter background while still with an egg, so unless interacting with other Ryus had anything to do with it, I am totally stumped right now.

I'm online usually at this time daily and yesterday picked all poop on UYS and played with the ryus i found awake to full hearts, it was from 11 to 12 (NST +5) yesterday and today i have the snow bg! :D

well no because that means you would have to add the formatting code for the table all over again.
there's no "simple" column buttom that divides the list into four columns but that's actually a tabel with 4 columns and x number of rows behind it.

I've come to re-state that I think the userbar backgrounds are tied to looking after your own Ryu! I've only tended to mine, so I stand by the theory that you gotta look after your own lil guy to unlock these!

But then how do people already have the winter background when they just get a ryu/it's still an egg and they haven't had the chance to interact with their own yet ;A;

BUT if what you say is true then that means it should be completely UNRELATED to tending ryus, full stop...............?

OH GOSH I didn't realize that this was happening!!! In that case I take back all the lies - I'm stumped!

Although, I'm with you in that looking around, I am beginning to suspect that maybe its not 100% related to JUST doing the tending actions.

I messaged Bat and go the go ahead to post it. The OP has the link to the script, and how to do it!
Its super easy, and anyone can now keep the list in order if they want to use it.

All it takes it just adding the new users and keeping it in the same format we've been using (the groups of four in the own row)
And you paste it into the top box, hit sort and it will spit out the list all nice and in order!

If we pair it down, it would possibly break the script, it would probably spit it back out in four columns, but I asked and he said we could totally change that if that decision is made!
(Also he mentioned possibly just adding a drop down on the page to select the amount of columns wanted to the option will soon just be there)

perhaps decrease the table with? it's now 1200. this could result in some people with longer usernames taking up two lines in a cell but that should be fine really.

i figured it out!!!!!!

everyone gets their backgrounds while theyre asleep, so its only reasonable to say that the backgrounds are rewards for getting a good night of rest :)

omg, but our Ryus only sleep if it's nighttime for us *and* we're not being active on the forum, so if there is something tied to how much our Ryus sleep it would encourage us to... well not go to bed at a normal hour, but at least have one less distraction preventing it.

As for the background thing, I had the grass, snow, and beach right when I first got mine- curious to find out what triggers obtaining them

Is it possible that, since you do not have a Ryu of your own to begin with, that the people that are unlocking the backgrounds, thus helping others scoop the poop, are actually helping themselves?
Since we need to do actions to unlock our own, those actions would then count towards unlocking other things, like BGs.

Meaning, all the early Ryu-ers that already had their eggs didn't have the luxury of contributing to their own eggs because they:
A. Stopped early to let others have a chance at getting their own and
B. The BGs weren't released at the time that the earlier people got them.
So once they stopped scooping, they didn't gain anymore chances to play with their own (unless snuck in of course), as it was common free range for more users to acquire hatchlings of their own.

Based on the fact that I've went through the Parent List multiple times without receiving the Funderland, ****EDIT: I'm dumb and don't know how to make sense. I apologize for this sentence - it seems impossible that everyone that already had one upon hatching/got one along the way had gone through that list as well. -
I mean, unless, after hatching, people were still scooping the poop.
That doesn't make sense though when you think about the fact that people are hatching with the BGs already unlocked. "Points" we'll say, start getting tallied from the moment you engage with a real one (right, Bat? *nudge nudge*). I think we can comfortably saying that points are based on poops, feeds, plays and hearts filled. Possibly, bc this is a theory.

I know this theory has been shot down numerous times before but I'll stick to my guns until something else comes up that makes sense (to me, please dont shoot me).

I do remember going out of my way to farm "rare" ryus AKA people who got theirs early on but haven't really been active since and therefore aren't on the regular farm rotation (like all the ryus from the active people on this thread). Which would have upped my count of individual ryus interacted with...

I'm 100% sure I cleaned for at least I would say 10-15 different ryu's in the same morning. (For about 3-4 hours) Had never done it before.

Editing to add I also cleaned a poop from Joe's ryu if that can make a difference.

I also fed my own once I got him from 2 to 4 hearts. Haven't done anything else after as I went off to have lunch with my in laws.

After getting the egg I stopped clearing poop but I still do it as I browse if I see one several minutes after a refresh that is still poopy. I also feed and play with them as I see non-full hearts.

The backgrounds honestly have me stumped, I feel like it's something super obvious but I just can't figure it out :P

After I got mine I didn't care for any other Ryus until the past 3 days or so, when I've refreshed a lot and scooped/fed/played with a bunch of different ones. I got the winter background while I was offline overnight (I think?), and I probably scooped at least 15 times yesterday and played/fed 20 times with a lot of different Ryus but still no beach BG. I'd like to say it has something to do with caring for your own Ryu because I haven't been able to do that much - I've maybe been able to scoop/feed mine 5 times - but then some people have all backgrounds when their Ryu is just an egg.

I looked on the announcement thread again and Bat said "If you're diligent with raising your Ryus, then you might even unlock new ones. Likewise though, this has been a really fun but tough one to figure it out!

For the snow background, I had only been interacting with my own on occasion and it just appeared when I was away from the computer for a while. So no clue what could even cause it, unless they are released on a timer perhaps? Or something?

I'm 100% sure I cleaned for at least I would say 10-15 different ryu's in the same morning. (For about 3-4 hours) Had never done it before.

Editing to add I also cleaned a poop from Joe's ryu if that can make a difference.

I also fed my own once I got him from 2 to 4 hearts. Haven't done anything else after as I went off to have lunch with my in laws.

Thank you! Was wondering if it was maybe only interacting with one multiple times, like a dedication type thing, but this has that theory right out the window.

Bat thanked that post and since then I am convinced that to unlock the bg, we have to spend X hours offline. presumably at night. I got my winter bg after 8 hours of "sleep". last night it was 9 and the surf up bg was not unlocked. I'll try 10 hours tonight.
I will add +1 hour until I find the exact amount of time.

I did a lot of interacting earlier today, so it could definitely be related to that, but I still feel like there's gotta be more because of the people who had stuff unlocked at the egg level. BUT WHAT? I looked through the art thread I made because paint–art connection and it seems like *most* but not all people who posted there have the new one, but not a direct correlation, so guessing it's a coincidence.

I thought the same and checked the thread. I noticed that only those people who drew their own ryus received the background. I think the only exception to that is Dita, but I don't quite remember.

The backgrounds we know of so far are Greener Pastures (default one), Winter Funderland (winter one), Surf's Up (?) (I think this is the beach one? I don't have it so I can't check) and the paint one is Painterrific

I would think it has something to do with art/drawing but if you drew your adorable little Apple and you don't have it then I'm not sure :o
I also got the Painterrific one without having the beach one, so it seems like it isn't gradually earned after the others/the other bgs aren't a prerequisite

Who's keeping track of the list of Ryus? I've seen several around the site that aren't looking so good!

We're experimenting with solutions for rewarding props and scenes. At the moment, everyone has the "Winter Funderland" scene. The "Painterrific" scene is rewarded manually, while the "Surf's Up" scene is based on ... something in particular. There are 9 unlockable scenes available so far (minus Greener Pastures, which everyone has)!

That sunset (wait, its a volcano!? It has to a volcano and im just blind but the colors on that are perfect) scene though :eyes:

Also going to check on the poor Ryus, hope they are alright :(

I just wanna say how much I fucking love all of this. A lot of us our on neopets for the nostalgia and -gotchis definitely hit that, too. Plus trying to figure out the specific mechanics and requirements remind me of being a kid on the avatar chat trying to figure things out, and bringing a bunch of us together. Plus just all the wild theories, the art everybody is making, the memes, whatever other creative expressions are yet to come (looking at you writers, once NaNo is over). Thank you everyone for filling those questions out! I'm not able to right now, but I am going to sit down and get all of those in a document so we can compare who has done what etc and see if it helps bring us to any conclusions!

I just wanna say how much I fucking love all of this. A lot of us our on neopets for the nostalgia and -gotchis definitely hit that, too. Plus trying to figure out the specific mechanics and requirements remind me of being a kid on the avatar chat trying to figure things out, and bringing a bunch of us together. Plus just all the wild theories, the art everybody is making, the memes, whatever other creative expressions are yet to come (looking at you writers, once NaNo is over). And idk, there's so much to be discovered, so many hints to unpack and figure out. And just in general to see where this feature goes over time. I just get really excited about things, okay.

Honestly, this is so spot on! Its been so much fun to work on this with everyone and spend time together just being -excited- to see what comes next!

Do you remember what time of day they unlocked? Greener Pastures I got when he was born on 15 Nov, Winter Funderland a few days later on 19/20 Nov.
Did you have multiple backgrounds at once? Nope.
Did you have unlocked backgrounds before your egg hatched? Nope, only Greener Pastures.
Were you online when they unlocked? I don't really remember as I log out and in several times a day. It might have been awarded when I logged out?
Have you posted on the Ryu Art Share thread? Nope, as I have minimal artistic talent. ):
Do you take care of your own Ryu? Yes, I will scoop his poop and get him to full hearts if he doesn't already have them!
How often do you interact with other users Ryus? I will usually scoop poop and play/feed them if I randomly see that they don't have full hearts when browsing the forums. Once or twice a day I will actively look for Ryus to interact with (i.e. all that are not sleeping. I will interact with them even if they already have full hearts).
How often do you interact with your own Ryu? I aim to interact with him at least 10 times a day (I will still interact with him when he already has full hearts).

As I interact with Ryus (my own and others) quite a bit, I don't think Surf's Up and Painteriffic have to do with the number of interactions with Ryus~ maybe it's something else? Bat also clarified it's nothing to do with the amount of time spent offline on CK. I'm not too sure what it is but I would LOVE to get the Surf's Up background!

Considering how many times mine died as a kid, seems reasonable that these can, too. I think there's been too many of us on and playing around to let any of the hearts get too low, though.

I think Bat mentioned a few pages back that several users had like no(?) or low hearts; maybe it won't go lower than a certain point? I feel like giving them the ability to die is too cruel. :miserable:

I've noticed a few people on the parent list don't seem to have the userbar active. Do we know if hearts deplete in that scenario? If so, we could ask them? Maybe I'll remove mine for a little bit and see what happens, not for a full test, but just to see if it poops which would at least tell us if that could be an avenue to answer..a
