With rabb.it on the way to an early grave (rest in peace!), I've put together a guide for how to watch videos with your friends (or mortal enemies) through Discord.*

*This guide assumes you have already downloaded and signed up for Discord.

Step 1: Add your streaming client of choice to Discord as a game.

To do this, first open the application in which you wish to stream your video. For the purposes of this tutorial, I'm going to use VLC Media Player.

Next, open Discord, go to the Settings menu, then the "Game Activity" tab on the left side. Click on the "Add it" hyperlink.

A dropdown menu appears. Select your program.

Step 2. Make your audio clearer by toggling input sensitivity.

This step is not mandatory, but will help with audio playback for your friends. (There's few things worse than trying to watch an action sequence where the audio lags.)

Presuming your have not yet left the Settings menu, click the "Voice & Video" tab on the left side. Then, toggle "Automatically Determine Input Sensitivity" to OFF and slide the slider as far to the left as it will go.

You're done in this menu for now, so either click the "X" in the top right or press the Escape key.

Step 3: Open a Discord DM and start a video call.

Open your Discord Direct Messages and select the friend (or group of friends) with which you want to stream. Click the Video Call icon at the top of the screen (it looks like a video camera).

When both (or all) of you have connected, an opaque window appears at the top of your screen that contains the profile pictures of everyone in the call.

Step 4. Click the Screen Share button.

Hover your mouse over the opaque window with the profile pictures. There's an icon that looks like a computer monitor with an arrow inside. Click it.

A dropdown menu appears with two options: "Stream [Program Name]" or "Share Screen or Window." You can choose the first option, but the second option is the one that will allow you more control over video quality. Click "Share Screen or Window."

Step 5: Select the program you want to share and your options.

A window appears. At the top, click "Application window." Note you can select your framerate and video quality. Some of the options will be greyed out; for example, I've never been able to stream 1080p at 60 frames per second.

Next, toggle Sound to On.

Then, select the program you'd like to share - if you're using VLC, it will be titled with whatever media is currently streaming. The browser naming convention is "Tab Name - Browser Name."

Step 6: Share!

Click the blue "Share" button. The program you selected will fill then be shown, and you can happily browse the internet at your leisure - Discord will only share the application window you selected in Step 5.

Happy streaming!
