View Full Version : Do you regularly "shut down" your computer?

Wooloo
08-27-2015, 11:56 PM
Excludes hibernating, putting to sleep, etc.

Do you?

I used to hibernate my laptop all the time, but ever since upgrading to desktop and getting an SSD, I shut down my computer every night because start up takes ~15-20 seconds to do. I was always under the impression that shutting down your computer regularly was a good habit to get into, but all my friends just leave theirs on 24/7. Does it matter if I shut down or not?

The question mostly applies because I got a new ultrabook, and I sometimes close it and forget that I left it on. (I think it hibernates after a certain amount of time... not too sure.) Will this have any negative effects on my laptop?

Hm... I know that my father always tell me to restart the laptop every day, as a good measure against Windows causing its own errors from running for so long... But yet... Desktops, I've heard the opposite before, that shutting it down constantly can cause it to break faster...

IDK...

I notice since I've started leaving it on to ab all the time has made it work better. Dunno how it works but hey. It works XD

i've been told from my computer guy that leaving a computer on will make it last longer. so since then i've left my PC on for long periods of time up to 6months-1year with out full shutdown.

I have a friend who gave me the advice to always shutdown my Mac, since she never did that with hers and it got busted, and when going to the store to try to repare it, they told her this fact had a lot to do with why her Mac only lasted this long.

I usually set it to automatically shut down every night after falling asleep, mainly because I run some heavy programs for a few hours late at night and don't want my comp to overheat.

Only when needed. Heat cycles are bad as long as you have a good cpu and graphics cooler then leave it on

So the general consensus is to shut down laptops but it's okay to leave desktops on? How come there's a difference?

Nothing to do with not liking leaving them running (although thats a good way to wear the fans out) I do restart every now and then as it appears to provide a significant performance increase as opposed to constantly sleeping/hibernating them!

Monster1uz is right. It can hurt your computer if it is on high temperatures for long periods every day. So that's a downside to leaving it on. But if you can overcome that, and keep your computer on low power mode or something without shutting it down very often, it'll prolong your laptop's lifespan.

When I had my old laptop, I'd just hibernate it cause I was too lazy to save my files before shutting it down, and if I hibernate it, I get to access the same old files the next day. It'll get all laggy and what not if I didn't shut it down for a few consecutive days

But now that I have a new ultrabook, I shut it down every night cause well, I'm babying it I guess.

I personally run my mac 24/7. I have a program that I run throughout the day and part of the night, but I have my laptop set where it doesn't go to sleep. I've only been doing this for maybe 3 or 4 months. Prior to that I would shut it down semi-regularly. I've noticed that for me my laptop has been running more smoothly keeping it up all the time, but that may just be coincidence. c:

I shut my laptop down when I'm done using it for the day or am going to work. But I am known to let mine idle during the day when I wander away from the keyboard. I don't have an SSD, so keeping the amount of revolutions it has to do down keeps it from wearing out sooner. That's not so much of a problem now with more HDs going to Flash or hybrid Flash form. <- Don't quote me on this, it's been awhile since I've checked things on Ifixit, lol.

When I used to use a macbook/apple desktop I always shut it down, mostly because of overheating issues and because the shut-down/start up was supposed to help it self-defrag. The one good thing about Apple is that it doesn't do stupid things with sub-directories like Windows does (the other was Adaptic Toast, but that's it).

I let my laptop sleep whenever I am done because... Its got a battery.
My desktop? I am sure the off/on button thing still works but why would I test it?

In all seriousness leaving the pc on consumes more electricity, turning it off and on shortens component lifetime.

In the long run its still cheaper to turn off every time.
Is it that big of a deal? Well not really.

Yes! It bothers me to no end when people don't shut down their computers or AT LEAST restart!

My mom never shuts down her laptop and wonders why it will start freezing after a while or there'll be connectivity issues with the printer or mouse or something. Whenever she asks for help I just tell her to restart and she's consistently amazed when it fixes whatever her problem was, as if I haven't told her a million times to take better care of the poor thing! ALWAYS has it plugged in too, even when it's sleeping, and wonder why it doesn't hold a charge anymore when it's not even old :/ Same thing with her phone. I tell her to shut it down before going to sleep since she puts it on silent anyway, but nah. Then complains when it has issues or the battery doesn't last very long when she's only had it a few months. Sigh.

It's always better to shut down when you're not doing anything. It doesn't really does any damage if you turn it on 24/7, unless you run it for a very long time or youre running a lot of programs/tasks, I usually shut down my lappy once every 2-4 weeks.

if you don't feel like reading to make everything short and cute
it's not recommended to always turn your pc on and off because it causes wear to the mechanics of the PC and an occasional restart is recommended to ensure integrity of your operation system. it's recommended to leave your pc to sleep when not in use

My laptop is usually fully shut down once or twice a week when I notice things aren't running as smoothly. Other than that, I usually leave my laptop in sleep mode. My sister left her tablet turned on for a few months straight, and that little thing ran incredibly slow and froze all the damn time.

so I didn't know the answer to this at first. I usually shut down my PC after every use. so I did some googling and I found this:

Oh dang, for real? I almost always shutdown my PC every day (I think the weekends are the only time I don't). Whenever I leave it sleeping, everything just gets laggier until I restart. Maybe it's 'cause my computer is ancient, but still.

yah maybe it's already slow from being old and outdated?
the article actually says if you have an old computer , it's more of a reason to not always shut it down because it wears down the mechanical components of the computer.i have been unaware of all of these myself. I shut down my computer after every use. but the explanation actually makes sense

Hmm yeah, maybe. It could also be the case that it might not be as good if you shutdown and restart very frequently, but maybe once every few days is better. Hard to say without doing rigorous studies for it though.

the only time articles say it doesn't matter is if you barely use the computer...for example: if you're only going to use the computer for a task and don't plan on using the PC again a couple of days later.
this is all new to me too.
when you say old, how old are we talking about tho? and whether or not if you've upgraded any of the components at all

When my computer is not in use, it is turned off, I don't know in reality if this is needed, but I have no reason to keep it on so I make sure everything is off when not in use.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I rarely don't do anything with my computer for a couple days though, so maybe I should start having it sleep more instead of shut down...

Mine is about 5 years, though I recently cleaned it up (both hardware and software). No upgrades to the components. It runs better than it did before, but it still lags after waking up from sleep.

It used to be that keeping the computer running was better for it (I'm talking maybe 10 years ago, on older tower computers), but it might have changed since then. Judging from the ancient computers in my office and when I played around with them, I think it's worse to keep them on through the night or weekend. They just freeze and die when you come back. Laptops are probably better with power management and could be kept either off or asleep, but don't quote me on that.

My laptop is in sleep mode as I am always studying for uni and it's so much more convenient to just come back to it. I DO prefer to switch things off though to save power. I'm a bit surprised to see it's better for the PC to be left on!

I shutdown my computer after every use mostly for updates, but if you're on an actually desktop computer, then I'd say it's more for saving power and lowering that electricity bill even by just a tiny bit.

I rarely bother shutting my laptop down; it hibernates when I close the lid and that's good enough for me. I'm probably dealing with very sub-optimal speeds thanks to not refreshing the RAM or whatever as a result, though.

I always turn my desktop computer off, but I rarely turn off my laptop, I just kinda.. shut it and forget about it for days ahaha.

I shut it down when I'm going to be gone for a long period of time. Other than that I just keep it on and turn off the screen when I go to sleep.

I keep my desktop on and turn it off whenever I leave for trips/for updates. Although, it's extremely hot over here so I turn it off during the days when I'm not using it.

I normally just turn off my computer when I'm not using it, saves me some electricity.

Now that I got an SSD I reboot a lot more. Probably should automate actually turning it off when done backing up overnight.

I don't think my computer is ever shut down unless there's a power outage and I've had it for several years now, custom built myself. I do regularly reformat the entire system though.

for the most part i leave my computer running pretty much 24/7. i have a laptop so i close it and it hibernates under my bed. if it is moving particularly slowly, i will restart it, but verrrry rarely do i actually turn it off and leave it off for more than an hour.

I usually do shut down, I find Hibernating and Sleep Mode to be useless imo, electricity still gets used and your pc just lags.

Mardan
11-19-2018, 03:56 PM
I turn it on in the morning and off when I go to sleep.
I used to leave it on 24/7 but since I started sleeping closer to it I can't stand the fans if it's been running for a while.
Plus, everything on this side of the decade leaks memory like crazy, so it almost feels like a daily shut down is more of a requirement than a choice.

I haven an Acer laptop that I got in like 2012 and I've been using it ever since. I only shut down at the end of the day, and rather intermittently put it to sleep throughout the day when I'm done with it. So like I'll turn it on in the morning and do some stuff, then close it and let it "sleep" until I get back to it later. Then when I'm going to bed, I actually shut it down. My dad fixes computers/laptops and rebuilds them and stuff and has always told me that I should shut it down at least once a day. It's worked for me!

I'll give my pc a good restart every few days - other than that it's on most of the time. I try to remember to shut it down if I know I won't be using it for more than a few hours, but I'm pretty forgetful.
