I have an extender because my main router has to pass through a fire rated wall which kills its reception. I'd probably say its got 90-95% up time. They do drive me nuts and fail at random times. At the end of the day its all up to preference.

I use an alfa usb adapter model awus036nha hooked up to a raspberry pi as a wifi extender to my cabin which is about a mile and a half away. It works well enough, I switched out the omni directional antenna (which is just a screw on coaxial), to a directional antenna that I made. Pretty simple. The great thing about alfa products is that you can change the tx power of them. And on most models you can actually set it higher than what is allowable by fcc regulations (due to radiation output and such).

Either should be really fast so it shouldnt matter which one you choose.
