    Good day turned bad

I went to the States today to get a new sound system installed in my car (new deck + all around speaker system) which cost me a good sum of money. When I tried coming back to my city, after crossing the border and going through customs they were suspicious cause I couldn't find my passport, so they did a search, saw the boxes for my new speakers in trunk and demanded the receipt. They basically cornered me so I had to pay taxes on it all. :/

On top of this, as this all happened another bomb threat took place and all of the border patrol officers walked out on the job so me and my cousin were stuck in customs for almost 3 hours.

    Good day turned bad.

Can border patrol demand taxes for an item you bought and paid for already?

I'd have slapped them with a wet fish.

It's that or they can just send you to jail for tax evasion. It's more like "You're going to pay taxes on this right?"

    Lose/lose situation for you.

i don't understand. You paid for speakers in America. I know we tax everything, so you got taxed by the canadians as well? Can they double tax you?

    I don't get it.

Ideally, you wouldn't have to pay taxes on an item twice assuming it is sales tax. Sales tax is the tax you pay on retrieval of the item. While you do get double taxed in MANY situations (state tax AND federal tax levels), these are applied to income tax not sales. The issue at hand is that I believe Joe is facing a canadian custom imports tariff, which is a tax in it's own right, but is more correctly coined as a tariff (a cost for bringing items into the country).

The jist of custom tariffs. I'm not 100% on canadian law, but that's basically it. This is a tax for bringing items not made in canada, into canada.

    Edit: What ronith said too.

Sucks. Where did you cross? Tunnel or the bridge? I had better luck at the tunnel. Where were the parts made? If it is in USA/CANADA/MEXICO you would have been duty exempt. I think McIntosh Labs is the only one though that makes it in the USA...

Next time, have everything neatly prepared in advance. I know for a fact when you cant find documents quick enough and smoothly enough, it raises a red flag. I crossed the border many times near where you live, and I have a lot of experiance with this. The best thing is to be vaque with them. And never give them any problems/ attitude. Just answer their questions, but don't say to much. The best thing to do is to have your old parts shipped back to you...
