I've chosen thieves no idea what this whole thing is about though.... Can anyone give me a quick brief?

The Obelisk operates on a 2-week schedule. Starting on Monday you get to choose your team: 1 of the 3 options (there are actually 6 options in total - not every team is available each week). You have Monday through Wednesday to decide. Starting on Thursday you will battle the other 2 teams (1P opponents), and you can battle all the way through Sunday. The following Monday is when the winning team is announced. If you were a part of that team and played at least 10 battles you win an avatar, a site theme, and your choice of (you need an account to see links) You get to use your boon benefit for the whole week until the following Monday, when the process starts over (choosing a new team).
