if your ucs are low-mid tier you're way better off but there is still always a risk factor.
Advice given already is pretty good. Have a mix of converted/unconverted pets. I keep a converted as my active. Have a built up account. Avoid the PC. Know the history of your bought pets if possible/only buy from reputable sellers.

The advice i'd give is basically what sorbet said, i don't use my ucs as active as well but i do preffer not using that, don't know if i would be in a bad position if i did, i'm frequently visiting boards (not the pc of course) and i never had an issue with it, i'm active in my guild and i'd say avoid getting reasons for people to look your lookup like: is my lookup pretty? look how many avatars/stamps/trophies i have and stuff like that.
besides that i guess you should be fine, i'm safe with 4 high tiers on my main and if you take the time to build your account to look like your account is worth as much as your pets you won't be going trough that much of risks.
I bought a UC, waited several months and brought it to the PC. Granted that it's not a high tiered UC, I never had an issue. Trading was fine so far and acted natural always. Always went with my gut with the people I chose to trade with and never did it with those I felt uncomfortable with. Like what others said, building your account is the most important step and it helps when your user has lookups and pets customised well what not.
I mean, it's called cheating for a reason. It's 100% against the rules so whether you chat or enter contests there is always going to be a risk. If you took the time to make things look more legit and aren't showing off and making things obvious, you will likely be fine. It's all about being smart and handling yourself properly.
What's my definition of success?
Creating something no one else can
Being brave enough to dream big
Grindin' when you're told to just quit
Giving more when you got nothin' left
I think everyone has pretty much covered it all...
I definitely think that, as long as you are smart about it, you shouldn't have to stay away from the user-to-user interactions. The PC is the biggest no-no and with the climate there right now I'd advise against it anyways, but since you said you aren't going there then I wouldn't worry too much.
Just make sure you have a well built up account (avatars, some trophies etc) and there are a bunch of awesome guides on here about securing your account(s) and making things look as legit as possible. If you want to go into the BC, I would start with your converted pets (if you have any) first, that way people get used to seeing you there.
