I would see the point if there was something significant out of it, obviously for real awards they feel accomplished. But what does a NC background feel when they win the vote?
They really need to rethink this completely, it must just be their tactic to getting daily activity. Next year it will probably run for 2 months.

For what it's worth it probably gives them real data on what items users are enjoying more than others. It's pretty good market research, and you're being incentivised to vote by giving out prizes. Think of it as a survey I guess.

With that said, that can happen over a week or two at the most.

There have been past prizes for voting on all the release dates. I don't think they usually go for a lot of NPs though, so it'll probably be buyable soon if there is one.
