Ideas for a new job

I've been in customer service for 8 years now. I generally work in call centers. Overall, I'm sick of it. I just got this job a month ago now. I'm not one of those people that just quit because I don't like a job, and I can appreciate that some people would be jealous to even have a job at all. However, while I'm working this job, I'd like to plan on finding a job that I like.

The reason I dislike this job is due to the people that call me. People are so stupid. My job is basically navigating a website and placing orders for people that are too lazy or who lack basic technical skills to do so themselves. I don't mind dealing with the old foagies who don't know their address bar from their search bar, but when I get people in their mid 30's who act as though I have nothing better to do than to check five-six different items for them, Idk. I lose it internally.

I'm not a people person. Unless I like you, I pretty much hate you. It's not personal.

With that being said, I am looking to try and branch out of my comfort-zone in terms of a job. Here's what I'm working with:

• High School Diploma
• 8 years work experience
• 6 years call center experience
• Reliable transportation
• Not a people person.
• Finished calculus in my Junior year of high school

Anyone have any ideas on things to start looking at? Right now I'm only making $11/hr. I've made $17.31/hr at my highest. So my minimum in terms of wages would be $11/hr.

What are your interests, and do you have a feel for any particular jobs or industries at the moment?
That might narrow your search, your description as stated make things very broad of us.

Also:

-Indoors or outdoors?
-Hands on, or hands clean?
-Thinker, or laborer?
-Casual, or business formal dress?
-9 to 5, graveyard, or else?

Just random points to narrow your idea searching.

Have you considered returning to school to upgrade your credentials, even if only part-time?
I don't mean a full Bachelor's Degree, but maybe even a half year/1 year/2 year specialist occupation program from a technical school or something.

You may only be a HS grad, but 8 years of work experience is very solid and you should definitely be making more than that.
Here, people with your qualifications find a steady job, and go at it for a few months/years; eventually making $18-24/hr.
Some even become managers doing $30+/hr, but that's fairly uncommon, so I won't touch up on that.

We both know of common stories where HS grads and HS dropouts begin menial jobs, rising in wage and position with experience until they become a big-wig (or at least a decent position), ordering around the youngins and educated peeps around. Positions others didn't think they'd achieve.
When looking for your next job, look for one with good potential for advancement, even if you have to start at the bottom. It's a personal investment.
That way, no time will be wasted while you work as a peon; you know jobs like call centers are terminal, you'll go nowhere until you quit/get fired. Then you'll have nothing to show afterwards.

There are better things in life than $11/hr can afford. Aim higher, be determined, and you'll get it.

I worked as a customer service agent for Nationwide for 2 years making $17.31/hr on a graveyard shift. I loved it. I took maybe 24 calls per shift compared to the job I'm working now that pushes 70-80 per day.

Honestly the most fun job I've ever had was working in a gas station as an assistant manager. I made crap for money, but being able to be by myself and have a sense that it was 'my' store, has been unmatched throughout my work experience.

School is definitely something I'm interested in. Unfortunately my parents together make 100k+ annually and refuse to give me financial assistance for college. But this is the first year where their income doesn't matter on my FAFSA so I'm definitely going to be looking into it.

Maybe try Dispatcher job for a taxi company, or trucking company, or even emergency services, it is similar work to call center but much much different.

Or maybe try work in a grocery store as overnight stocker like at Wal-Mart or something, they generally start around 9-11$ hr depending on what part of country your in.

The feeling of being your own boss and running the show is awesome, as you said.
Just be wary of the dangerous "comfort zone", where complacency will hinder your future.
Sometimes the better things require risk and challenge. You're still young; can't say the same for someone in their 40s or 50s that runs a gas bar.

If you're looking at going back to school with high certainty and soon, hopping temp jobs wouldn't be such a bad idea.

It's better to just get your paycheques and bounce when you need to, rather than start working a job that shows promise, and then quit.
Managers hate that, and are unlikely to call you back later if you weren't an extraordinary worker or if they personally liked you.

$11/hr would be minimum. I am currently living with parents but I've been approved for an apartment and after doing the math $11/hr is pushing it, but the minimum I'll be able to scrape by with. Rent is not very eh...reasonable in my area. Minimum for a studio in these parts is $475, and the place I'm going with is a a 1 bedroom for $565. So that with utilities/living expenses etc. Pretty much takes all of the income I'll be making at $11/hr. But I'll look into some dispatching jobs. I've considered it before.

if you do get into a dispatch type job, they pay pretty well and usually have benefits unless you end-up working for some security company. IDK if you have an ADT office in your area, but they are always hiring for dispatchers

I'm starting to hate call centers too.. The money is great, almost $13/hr with shift differential for a college student, my coworkers are awesome but the people are soo dumb to put it lightly. I'm a super laid back person but after 2-3 hours of being on the phone, I wanna hang myself.

This is exactly where I'm at in life. I get seriously unstable at the end of the day. I wish I could say it was a joke, but yeah, it's pretty f'd up. Sometimes I just sit in the care and smoke 2-3 cigarettes before I even leave to go home because of how much I need to unwind.

Me too! Not cigs though. I smoke a hookah every night. I get super annoyed with everything after lunch with customer when in everyday life I brush everything off. I started drinking coffee when I never had before. I started been short & mean. My whole demeanor changes walking into that place
